An Unforgettable Retreat Experience

While I was still a teenager, there was this particular summer that I spent with my aunty, at the time she wasn't married and as well didn't have kids so I was the only one around with her when she told me one day that she would be going for a work trip with her other colleagues and they will be gone for the weekend.

I was curious of what a work trip involved, and I didn't hesitate to ask what it was going to be about and what they would be doing there, my aunty did her best to explain to me, but I didn't really understand why all of them had to travel together to a particular place for several days leaving just me and her maid at home.

I was promised lots of goodies upon her return, so I was comforted. By the time my aunty came back and began telling me all about her trip, and how fun it was because it was like a retreat that involved them relaxing in a calm environment, having fun and re-strategize for the next phase of action, I was intrigued, I felt really excited for her and I wished that when I was all grown I would work in an organization that did these sort of things.

Towards the end of last month, a retreat was organized at my workplace that was worthwhile. It was fun, relaxing, we bonded and did so many things that made us long not to return to work.

So it was almost a one-week event; we arrived on Monday and departed on the Friday of that same week. Upon arrival, after we had freshened up, we had some form of introduction as we had colleagues from other states that we hadn't met before join us.

The next day we had some sort of training, but after that we had a sip and paint section that was so relaxing and funny, as we got to see paintings of different colors and shapes from different 'artists'. So we were provided with already sketched mini canvases, which we were meant to paint to our desire with the paints that were provided for us.

We saw different artistic expressions from my colleagues, as everyone put in their best. It was really colorful. By the end of the day, everyone retired to their rooms, tired but happy.

On one of the days we had a trivia where we got to answer questions, it was funny because there were some questions that we knew the answers to, but because of how fast we had to think to answer them we ended forgetting the answers to those questions, but it was fine anyways it wasn't a do or die affair.

Karaoke night wasn't left out, we heard the good, bad and best voices, we sang to our favorites, with the older ones tending more to the old school tunes. It was really fun because everyone freed themselves of all that was needed to go, and we were all just a happy bunch enjoying our time.

Some people swam as there was a pool in the hotel we stayed at, but yours truly couldn't join them as I don't know how to swim; all I did was stand on the sidelines and watched them have fun.

There was this particular game we played, called 'Taboo'. So a particular word is written down, and then underneath it are 4 or 5 words that could be used to describe the word at the top. We were divided into two groups, so a particular person representing a group would come out and try to describe the word to his or her team members with someone from the other team ensuring they don't use the words listed under to describe the major word, if they do he shouts taboo and they have to drop that particular card.

There was a particular colleague, when it was her turn to describe the word, she went mute, as she couldn't think of any word to describe it, which sent everyone reeling in laughter, as her expression was so funny.

For the most part, I enjoyed the entire experience, being that I was part of the team that organized the trip, it was a joy that see that all went well, and everyone dropped their titles and positions at the door and made an effort to enjoy themselves. At the end of the day, everyone went home feeling relaxed and re-energized.
