This week's #POBPhotoContest suggestion from @friendlymoose inspired me to think of "leading lines." Leading lines, as a photographic tool, help guide the viewer's eye toward a visual or narrative outcome using lines—whether natural or artificial. They act like invisible markers, existing somewhere within the diversity of colors, shapes, textures, and tones of an image, to guide the viewer's eye toward a destination—a feeling or emotion, a measured depth, or simply a standalone, expressive work.
The first image shows the parallel lines of a highway bridge over a still body of water. The reference points for attention presented here illustrate how leading lines can connect us to places and guide our gaze across the water's surface.
The second image shows the relentless straightness of a road, straight and narrow, cutting through the landscape. In the second image, roads become prominent leading lines that converge toward the horizon, reinforcing the sense of infinite space.
Image three further conveys a sense of serenity and calm through the smooth leading lines. The image welcomes the striking and almost elegant curve of the bridge, which follows the gentle course over the river. The leading lines, although soft and organic, guide the viewer's eye throughout the image, inviting them to enjoy their view.
I find the deliberate use of leading lines in photography very interesting. Recognizing the leading lines in the environment requires a certain level of awareness and careful composition to maximize the potential of the leading lines. I hope you enjoy this small collection of my interpretations of the theme of "leading lines" and that perhaps some of you will be inspired to seek out some of the more interesting visual elements.
