I have talked and will continue to do so in a section of the blog about animals that are harmful to the garden, but there are also many animals that are beneficial to the garden. These are the predators that help us control pests in the most efficient and clean way possible. Our job will be to attract them and respect them so that they can help us get the best harvests.

I must confess that the Shrew has been one of my favorite animals since I was a child. Yes, my parents also thought it was very strange, but it was my grandfather who first introduced me to them. So I learned to appreciate them and not confuse them with mice. And this is one of the main problems with these small mammals: they are often mistaken for mice. They are clearly different if you look closely, but the truth is that for most people, a little movement and everyone screams mouse. They either jump on a table or chase it to death.

Shrews are great allies for gardeners because, unlike mice, they are strictly carnivorous, so the grain is safe. They mainly eat insects, especially slugs, worms, and snails. But they can also eat larger animals like small snakes, mice, or voles. And that's because they have poisonous saliva. Don't worry, they are not dangerous to humans. They tend to hang around the compost pile, and if you see them in the garden, it means you're doing things right.
