RVB Barney, Soil Temp, Tree-B-Gone, Macro Attempt, Toasted Tom, Snow Fungus, Tortillas - Friday

I do enjoy my mornings for the most part and am able to get my posts all made and lessons done by the time I need to be working. Yesterday @stryeyz worked from home so the day was a bit different to start but tended towards normal overall. I had the PDC on first thing as I am up at 4-5am when it is starting. It wasn't until the last of the early session when Barney made it to the oche but he managed to dispatch his opponent and will now be facing the 16 year old Luke Littler who has idolized Barney, (who is 40 years older that Luke). I really look forward to the match tomorrow but am feeling like Barney is likely to lose this one as Luke is just too damn good.

It was before 9am and I went to let he birds out and check the soil temp in the greenhouse. Outside the row cover it was 35.5F.

IMG_20231229_084736.jpg

The mound over the heater was 43.5F so ab 8 degree difference. That is the surface and that is about what the frost guard row cover is supposed to handle. So I don't know. I have to have cover to help retain heat but I can't tell how much the heater is causing compared to the cover trapping....

The Christmas tree came out of the house today and I had all the ornaments off the day before so it was just the lights that had to come off. I think I may sleep better without the constant shine of light in the other room.

I feel bad for everyone who has to toss their tree on the curb, ours ALWAYS goes to the sheep who quickly decimate the greenness on it.

@stryeyz has a weaving project on her loom and the light has been catching it such that I have been wanting to try a macro shot of the weave and fibers. I setup and tried a couple of stack sets.

IMG_20231229_124015.jpg

The first one turned out like shit.

The second actually got a bit of clearness in the photo. I had to crop a lot to get this. I have to play with the f-stop more and i realized that the f ring on my lens was locked so I need to try again with synced lens and camera, plus I need to do shorter movements between each picture to get better depth once stacked.

It's sad but our tom died. He was looking a bit rough the past week or so and I was trying to pile to foo on him to regain mass but he couldn't hang and gave up his ghost. I hauled him out to the bone yard where the animals and eagles will take care of the carcass.

On my way back I found a field of snow fungus. All the mushrooms that had popped up when it was warmer, like today.

IMG_20231229_135146.jpg

These were cool amongst the moss and pine needles.

IMG_20231229_135214.jpg

Then these still covered in snow.

IMG_20231229_135226.jpg

This was my favorite. I love the way the single mushroom is standing sentinel in the midst of the vast whiteness of snow.

I sat at my computer and went back through each month of photos from the past year and made a list of the various things I have done each month. It is a retrospective post with a list of 64 links to posts of mine that are representative of the task or event since most were multi day. It's going to take a bit to get all the post links but it will be a really helpful post for me to have for future. I need to go back and do the same for 2021 and 22 as I have daily posts from both years as well.

It was that time again. We had eaten the tortillas and a few had molded since we didn't eat them fast enough. I decided to not let that happen this time. I made my normal "double" batch which should just be changed to the normal instead of the "half" that it really is. 6 tortillas is not a batch, I need at least 2 dozen if not three to make it worth while.

IMG_20231229_150541.jpg

I divided into 24 pieces from the mass which makes 5 to 8 inch tortillas.

Press each in the press between pieces of butcher paper.

They went on the griddle to cook on each side until browned.

There is little as delicious as fresh baked bread or fresh made tortillas/flat bread.

It was a battle to get the boys to clean but the eventually got something done. We had leftovers for dinner as we are out of buns and salads until today. The Kraken game started at 7pm and I watched until the first period was up and we went out to soak. I came back in in time to see the Kraken actually won in OT 2-1.

I also went and updated my spreadsheet for my Hive financials for the next year. I neglected to take into account the 2.91% HP interest accrued so I added that in. My year end goal for 2024 is now 4k HBD in savings and 30K HP.

PDC is on and Barney goes against Littler this afternoon, Man Utd play this morning, I'm trying to figure out how to install a second layer of plastic in the greenhouse to create a big dead air space which likely will use the pipe clips to clip the plastic on the inside. I'll work on my retrospective post, I have to work on the boys' Switch and get it online, and I'm not sure what else will happen this afternoon yet.

Because of the snow, there are some difficulties in planting in this way, but this season comes every year, one should be prepared for it, and one enjoys it a lot.

Wow! those tortillas look good! and the project on the loom is very inspiring. Those textures look extremely soft.

The tortillas are SUPER easy to make and a batch is done in about an hour. I've stopped eating bread mostly and primarily eat these to help my eczema.

Yes same! I don't really eat bread anymore. I found that store bought white bread gave me acne and made me feel bad about myself and didn't go well with our homesteading lifestyle. So now I make rice bread, often with pumpkin or some other veggie - but tonight for New Year's Eve I am making whole wheat sourdough pizza! exciting!
