Parade, Bug Sex, Bees, Soil Mixture, Seeds, Trailer, Kraken Lost - Monday
Yesterday morning we went over to the school for the parade that the school setup for the 3rd and 4th grade students as they go into testing weeks. The marching band from the high school came down to lead the way.
All the other grades had made signs and were lined up in the south lot and followed behind the band as they marched around to the north lot.
The 3rd and 4th graders were all out at the curb for the parade and after getting pics @stryeyz and I joined the end of the lineup. It was a pretty nifty thing to see and be a part of, seeing all the signs made and the supportive nature of the school. Makes us even happier that our boys are here.
I was walking past the gate to the garden when I saw bug sex. The pair of stoneflies were doing the dirty, the only thing they do in this stage of their life as they don't eat or anything, just sex and dump eggs.
I drug the soil bucket out of the basement and took it to the greenhouse where I got some seeds started in the tray. Toothache plants, morning glories, and trying to get tamarillo to grow for once.
Slowly but surely I am improving my aim. In trying to hit the bull I am actually getting some better groupings. Darts is really not easy to find consistency with.
I popped open the hive to check on the bees mid day when it was warmest. The queen was out of her cage and the hive looked to be buzzing along really well.
After pulling the empty queen cage out and resetting the frames I had to make a batch of syrup for them. They had gone through the quart jar of syrup so I upped it to a half gallon jar. I have an opening by the jar riser so they can get to the pollen patty I have set next to the jar.
After picking up the boys from school I got the trailer hooked up and the barrels all loaded for the grain run this morning.
I am rather pleased with how this turned out. I wanted to make a soil mix for starting papaya and I wanted it to be really nutritious for them for a long time. The alpaca has a spot that she goes to so it makes it easy to get just her poo which is able to be put directly on plants without burning them. I started with shovels full of her pellets.
Then I wheel across the pen to the grain pile and got a few shovels full added.
Then I went to the wood chips that I had emptied from the wheelbarrow and added a couple shovels full.
Then I went to the upper most garden and pulled 5 or 6 shovels full of good soil and added it to the mix.
I mixed it all up for a while with the shovel and the pitchfork until it was well blended.
I wheeled it over to the end of the greenhouse and then filled the buckets and set them inside through the window.
For plant labels I have been using these pieces from vertical blinds that I took down in the house when we first bought the place. I have a whole stack of them and they are heavy plastic which works well with the wet soils.
2 pots are the Hawaiian papaya and 4 pots are the Kag Dum papaya. I had one of the Hawaiian growing some years ago but lost it to frost. Now with the greenhouse I am aiming to have it going all winter which will allow me to keep the more tropical items alive.
The Kraken played game 7 and ended up loosing. It was a close game but they just couldn't get past the Stars in the end. Still pretty amazing for a 2nd year team. Hopefully this bodes really well for next season.
There were some healthy storms rolling around to the east in the evening but nothing came of them until this morning when it started to dump.
I have been to town for grain already this morning in the rain and got to see an amazing sunrise/glow over Mt. Spokane as I headed down the bypass. It was cool to hear the rain on the greenhouse once I got home and strolled through it on my way back to the house. I will empty the barrels in a while, I am going to make another batch of the soil as I need to pot up my banana plants and get them in the greenhouse with the avocado plants to. I need to get the wood split and stacked, lessons done earlier than the past few days, and keep researching the RMHs.

We're having a parade here too
It's interesting but kinda stressful
I had to stop because my legs are swelling
What's your parade for?
Good looking stoneflies!
Having worked in or around greenhouses a few times, I can hear the rain on the plastic in my mind. It is a good sound.
