Grain Run, Trimming & Tying, Raking, Planting Potatoes, Kayaking & Fishing Eloika Lake - Saturday
I was out of the house after 6am to head to town yesterday morning for grain. It was only a single barrel so I was not in a huge hurry to get it. The traffic was okay but the stupid construction is like a feverish case of herpes that spread all over the city.
I stopped for gas on the way home.
I backed the trailer into the sheep pen as soon as I was back on the farm and I had it all shoveled out quickly. My ram was standing there staring at me waiting for the first shovel full of grain to land in front of his nose. Everyone else came piling in as I tossed the grain around.
After getting my posts done I was out in the garden. I had only a handful of cucumbers to pick in the greenhouse.
Then I had to do the tying and trimming of both the cucumber and tomato plants.
This year I have a HUGE number of lady bugs that are in the greenhouse and I LOVE IT! They are some of the best at eliminating pests.
After having dug the various rows of potatoes I want to grow more and have plenty of tiny spuds for just that purpose. I raked out the 3 rows in the main garden where the red Nordland grew, pulled the irrigation lines back out, then pulled the plastic back out.
I went through the seed spuds and pulled out the ones larger that have a few eyes. They range in size from about half an inch up to an inch and a half. I stuffed one per hole for 114 spots. I have the pole garden rows to plant today which will be another 98. I'm aiming for a 1000 total planted this year.
Around 11am I got all the kayaks loaded into my truck and all the accoutrements needed. It was only a 15 minute drive up to the lake where we quickly had everything unloaded and were headed out on the water.
The boys are solid on their kayaks and went tooling around with their fishing poles and boxes of worms.
While out on the water I heard it and knew what it was before even seeing it. The B-52 is one of the most unique sounding planes and when I caught sight it was again super obvious. The cigar shaped fuselage and the gargantuan wingspan... There is only one plane like it.
The stupid crappie were full on jumping EVERYWHERE around me. It was so fucking annoying having the fish plopping all around me but none of them would hit. I got some bites on the frog but the fish were too small so spit it out each time. I eventually went to my fly rod and another guy who was fly fishing and I sat on the water about 30 yards apart casting at each fish that would jump and we both were frustrated. I was happy to have figured out how to fly cast sitting in my kayak...
Our friends showed up as we were on the water and they came out to join us. I didn't go super far since the fish were everywhere in the super shallows. The lake is only 18 feet deep at the deepest and is chock full of underwater weeds and growth. Sinking lures are almost impossible to use without hook guards.
We eventually headed back in to the shore where the kids played while I loaded up the kayaks.
After talking for a while we were on our way back home.
We stopped in Riverside at the store and while @stryeyz was inside J went over to the little free library. He found a book and then R went and needed some help getting one. We will have to boys gather books they have they don't want and will take them up to fill in the shelves for younger readers.
We were home in time to catch the US beat Greece up in men's volleyball then had the games on till they went off. We made it out to soak normal time and I was out around dark so I could go make sure the dumb birds all went in the coop.
Today I have harvests first thing then I will get the pole garden rows raked and then potatoes planted, I have more to dig from the potato garden, the animal waters need refilling, I will make sure things are covered for the potential rain tomorrow, and maybe get the weeds mowed in a couple spots.
