Fly Fishing Gear, Peas, Chicks Hatched, Euros, Kayak Modifications, Rod Holder, Copa, Casting - Wednesday
Last day of the 100+ yesterday and in the morning first thing I was in town buying a lot of fly fishing gear that was posted on Craigslist. I paid likely more than I could have but to me the stuff is worth the $100. These 8 books alone would cost me nearly that much even used and as old as they are just browsing AbeBooks.
I got 3 fly reels in the lot and the biggest one is a Pfluegler Medalist like my original which needs cleaning but works okay, the next is a South Bend Finalist in pretty dirty condition and looks to be a parts reel for my original Medalist, then the newer reel is a North Shore reel with some pretty solid drag that doesn't really get very light so is likely for bigger fish.
There were a whole bunch of tied flies with the box on the left being filled with Dark Cahill flies. The case had a slew of various flies that I spent a bit of time mid day browsing the books for the names of some of them.
It was after 10am and already hot but I headed out to pick the peas that seriously needed it in the pole garden. I got another 6.25 pounds in the fridge. I may have to shift the peas to the cooler as we have so many stuffed in the fridge.
I was going to weight the peas in the coop when I heard peeping over my audiobook. I turned it off and went to the coop window and looked in to see a pair of chicks on the floor by the hen and then a bunch in the nest box. So I had to quick move the teens out of the brooder hut and into the pallet hut.
Then I went in the coop with a bucket and loaded all 9 chicks into it and caught the hen.
The nest box right beside has a hen hatching out at least 3 chicks, if not more, which today I will take and put the chicks all in the brooder. The one hen gets them all but she doesn't have to work hard in the hut.
With the mall sorted out I got to the summer squash for the first picking. Some have started out wonky so I have to pick them first. I ended up with 2.5 pounds and won't have a ton this year as I only have a single row growing.
At noon the Euro match came on Damn It England won. Stupid Netherlands turned off for a moment at the last minute and lost.
Early afternoon I did some modifications to my kayak. The first was to install the hatch and waterproof bag in the front. To do so I had to cut a large hole which I first used a 4" hole saw to cut the center out.
Then the jigsaw to to cut it the rest of the way.
The hatch got screwed down and the bag installed and it works perfectly.
Then I drilled 2 holes, one on either side just behind my seat.
The rod holders got installed and they are in a great spot, accessible and not blocking space inside.
It's been less than a week since I started the bug trap and already I needed to empty it out. It worked well with the super hot days as it killed the bulk of them by late in the day but there were still some alive that flew off when I opened the trap door. The chickens enjoyed the scraps.
In the fishing lot was a rod holder and I found the perfect spot for it under the patio roof.
All the casting rods and reels fit perfectly, are not tangled, and are easily accessible.
After taking the boys to town again I was home in time to see the Copa and it was wonderful to see Columbia win. They have their work cut out though against Argentina.
Spent some time filling my fly box and have one hell of a nice selection already.
I grabbed my 9 foot fly rod and tossed the big reel on and gave it a try in the driveway. I was getting nice 80 foot casts though the line is old and not super smooth. Cleaned up the reel should be okay.
They got home around 8pm and we ended up out soaking for a little while.
Today I have to pick peas again, tie lines in the greenhouse for the cucs and malabar spinach, I have an appt at noon, I have to move the chicks to the brooder, deal with branches from tree trimming, then get the boys to town in the afternoon again.

I never knew you could make bug traps
It looks nice
I’m wondering that one thing you can’t do
Have babies 👶
Yeah we can tell it's summer again.. you're working your ass off..
I so need to get into fly fishing. Something I have wanted to do. I love the ceiling rod holders something I need to get as well, great space saver. I have over 30 rods and most are in upright rod holders that I made myself which are in my man cave (basement).
The rod holder is slick and they aren't too expensive, Cabelas has this one for like $25. I love how well it works, I had all my rods just standing in a bucket in my shed so this is a massive upgrade. You can get a good basic fly setup for under a $100 for rod and reel. Like anything it can cost as much as you want to spend.
Yup $100 sounds about right but I always like to spend a little bit more for quality sake. The $25 rod holder cost is a good price I can see using it for my light action rods and such. I'll have to check out Cabela's or Bass Pro both are fairly close to me. Hey also good updates on your kayak I'm thinking of getting rid of my jon boat for one. I just like how kayaks are so versatile.
I need to throw down on a new fly rod, mine are all old to ancient. I've been eyeing up a short shaft trolling motor too, it could be side mounted quite easily and some run for many hours. There are some really nice fishing kayaks available, I'm trying to make my super cheapo one into something similar.
I've got some really old reels that work great. One of my favorites is Johnson, some I own are from the sixties. They made them to last. But some of the new age reels have to be replaced every so often. Nothing wrong getting a basic model kayak probably what I will do than accesorize to my liking 😊 BTW I'm USAF vet as well still working for them as a civilian now.
