Cucumbers Trimmed and Tied, Built Press Stand, Bale, Bones, Adventure Club - Wednesday

I made it out into the greenhouse before it got too hot yesterday morning and got to work on the rest of the cucumber row. It is quite amazing the difference between the before and after as there is a lot less density to the growth now.

It was about an hour to get the last of them trimmed and tied up. As I looked over everything I noticed that some of the tomatoes already need to be tied up again. I will work on them today a bit. Both the cucumber and tomatoes are starting to put off small ones but will soon be loaded with larger.

In preparation for emptying the ash from the fire pit I had to fix my shovel that the handle had broken off of. It just required pulling the plastic insert out and putting it in the handle and drilling a new hole for the bolt. I mounded the ash but let it sit another day to fully cool off before I shovel it today.

The hydraulic press needed a stand of some kind and I had already figured out the moving dolly for the wheels. The one I grabbed had a board screwed onto it and I found the other matching board to use for the top. I cut a 2x12 into 3 pieces which where the exact length I needed for the sides. I screwed it all together with decking screws and got 2 holes drilled for the press mounting.

It is perfect for the press and all the coin ring tooling will fit under it just right. The whole thing will be getting moved up to the craft studio but I need to get the pump filled, hooked up, and the system bled of air first.

The sheep needed a new bale rolled in and after taking the hay cage apart the boys helped me roll the last bale into the pen.

I'm pretty happy that it took just 6 bales to get us through to now from September of last year. That does mean that I will have to start getting more bales to stock up again.

I hiked up the sheep pen to check the fence line and then wandered beneath the eagle nest. They have fledged a baby so there is tons of debris below to pick through. Oodles of fish bones are EVERYWHERE thanks to the river being so close for them. The eagles are not above a bit of carrion though so there are the occasional rodent, deer, and bird bones that litter the ground.

We have decided to eschew Scouts as none of us really were into the "scouts" part and more into the getting together part. None of the boys really care about the badges and awards and more so care about having fun together. We are now the Elk Adventure Club and we met at the Elk park for our get together. The kids all had a blast playing and ended up having a pine cone battle with the ship and the invaders.

J brought his kite but had so much fun playing that he didn't fly it until we were ready to go but he got a few circles of the field with it nicely in the air above him.

Home before sunset and then soaking. One thing about the smoke and haze is that it really helped knock the peak off the heat during the day and I am fine with it again as long as the smoke doesn't drop and get thick.

Today I shovel the fire pit, tie some tomatoes, pull more weeds, harvest anything that is ready, plant seeds that I didn't do yesterday, and actually go kiting today at the high school as I have been slacking on it this week.

The scouting movement as a whole seems to be in a lot of turmoil. Between cost and politics, people seem to be looking for alternatives.

I am working on another preparedness program for the library again, and I sometimes think a scouting-type skill program for adults might be welcome in many communities. Learn navigation, knots, wilderness crafts, camp cooking, and so forth.

Yeah it is the cost and politics that none of the adults like. We can just as easily agree to meet on our own and bypass the bs.

It would be cool if you could access all the merit badge books to use as handouts. I'm sure there are tons of other resources as well.

Aww, your cukes and plants look amazing!

I am being lazy this year and intercropped my cukes in the massive sunflower patch so I don't have to trellis them, they can just climb the sunnies lol!

But I have to thank you for the reminder, I really need to get my tomatoes that aren't caged tied up. Guess I better get cracking 😉

And I swear the pics of your hot tub are eventually going to sway me into making an impulse purchase....(Glad you can enjoy a soak again!)

I'm blown away by the greenhouse growth, it is amazingly vigorous and already producing. My cucs in the pole garden are climbing the sunflowers as well but I really need to give them a hand as I have neglected them since before I left for California.

Do your homework on the hot tub as you want to make sure you get the right one for you. You probably don't need a massive one or a swim one which cuts the cost down but salt water or chlorine/bromine is a major choice along with jets and their location. Then you can make an impulsive purchase not an impulsive decision.

I like that impulsive purchase but not an impulsive decision line. It will more than likely be a decisive decision after lots of dedicated saving and research lol!

And I've been out in the wilds for the past few days, hence the delay in reply, but it was so worth it as I was rambling about mountainsides...

And and, double thanks for the reminder to coax the cukes onto the sunnie's stems. It's always something huh!

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend!

Join us....buy a hot tub ... 😂

A friend used to work at a hor tub store so she gave me some great tips on what to buy. She recommended a hot tub that was NOT sold at her former store...because once out of warranty, it is really accessible to get to the plumbing and wiring, and since Jon is a DIYer she recommended that style rather than the other ones (most of them) that have spray foam in around all the parts, that has to be dug out if you have to investigate a leak.....

Ours is chlorine (salt water ones just do a chemical reaction to create chlorine anyway) but it has UV and ozone as well so we need much less chlorine. We use a Frog floater which helps and then an oxidizing shock that is a lot like peroxide powder. All in all, it is not difficult to maintain once we figured out the tips and tricks that work best for us to keep it in balance.

It's great to see you work hard all day and the way we see the stuff inside your garden is doing so well.
