The Changes and Challenges I encountered as a Working Student

Good day, Hivean and the people here in the Ladies of Hive community! I like to share my experience in line with the question: "Changes are inevitable but sometimes we find it difficult to adapt to them. Was there a circumstance or a sudden change that impacted your life, routine, or lifestyle? How did you deal with it? Did you have a hard time?” and was suggested by @ifarmgirl. As a fan of hers, it motivates me to share mine too.

When I finished studying in high school, my goal was to proceed to college. The problem was my family was ordinary and supporting my college fully was impossible. My mother told me to use the discount offered by one of the colleges in Carmen, Cebu if you’re part of the” Sangguniang Kabataan” like the barangay officials but for the youth. I was a councilor/member at that time. The discount could help lessen the burden.

But I had a dream that I wanted to experience a school with high stairs. It is quite enjoyable when you are almost late, the room is on the third floor, and you run up the stairs to reach the area. It would be a challenging experience for me. Yes, my dream was so simple and ordinary and that’s me, an ordinary one.

When the school that was the choice promoted their school, the picture showed a one-story building. It’s a no for me.

Luckily, my cousin asked me if I would like to study in Cebu City and be a working student. I think it’s a great opportunity because not only I can study in the city and achieve my dream, but I could also learn to be an independent person. I already shared, I’m a lazy type of person.

I convinced my parents to accept the offer. Then, I bravely went to Cebu City alone, and when I reached the city, my cousin accompanied me to the school. I was accompanied also by her friend who first offered the working scholarship. The working scholarship had a due process, I needed to pass first the entrance exam and interview, then be introduced to the head of the department where I’ll be a working student.

I achieved all the processes to be a working student. The changes and challenges I encountered were as follows:

  1. My class schedule was evening. It was a drastic change in my school life. During the day, I need to work in the school at 8:00 in the morning and 5:00 in the afternoon. The routine was difficult at first because I never experienced this sudden change. When I am tired from my work, I tend to sleep during class hours. The good thing was most of my classmates were working students too. The understanding was evident from them.

 2. Dreaming to study in a school with high stairs was not a good idea. It’s like being careful of what you wish for. Running on the high stairs, you’re afraid to come late is exhausting. The change of type of school was challenging too.

 3. Having a schedule during weekends. I had a class schedule on Saturday and work on Sunday.

It was a challenging change for me when I chose to be a working student.

How did I overcome it?

Having a good support system can help you overcome those changes and challenges. I was lucky to be around with people who keeps motivating me to move forward. My parents, friends, the head of the department, and my working colleagues. I wanted to pose some pictures of them, but I have no consent about it.

These changes I encountered built me into who I am today. It gives me confidence that I can adapt to another change that came into my life.

Thank you for reaching this far. If you want to inspire, learn, and witness beautiful scenery, experiences, and places, do not forget to follow, upvote, and reblog my post to support and motivate me to write more. Thank you.
