The Sandbag House Reno Record - Re-screed and restoration of the stoeps part 2

Bright and early on Friday morning: the first mix

Friday's work saw half of the back stoep done.

They can't work in front of the kitchen on a Friday: it's kitchen day and besides the dust, I - and the odd other-than-workman-interrupter - am constantly in and out, either using the outside kitchen and/or collecting herbs from the garden. It's likely that that will happen on a Saturday. I can happily live with that.

Half way there

With half done, the extent of the subsidence - and slope - as a consequence of inadequate compaction is really evident. Now, I won't have a swimming pool on the stoep when I water the garden. A minor miracle.

Again, the evidence of subsidence and poor levelling still astounds me

Because the tool shed on the south side of the house had to be moved, they didn't work there on Friday. But, during the course of the day, Bertus went in search of another strong person to help move it so that they could do some basic preparation.

The garden tool shed which moved with us from Cape Town 14 years ago

They didn't get to throwing the slab on the south side of the house, but did some the preparation, including moving the garden shed.

The straight wall (...not...)

Not only did moving the shed reveal yet more evidence of Heath Robinson: the straightest external wall you have ever seen, but less debris and ick than I had expected, and which quickly brushed off.

The area cleaned out and tidied up ready for the new agricultural (French) drain and slab

The shed in its temporary home

The shed did not fall apart: that had been my greatest fear. That, too, will get a bit of TLC in the coming while.

Until next time
