The Sandbag House Reno Record - Preparing for Phase 2 - I

Today was about moving furniture to start preparing for phase 2. This is the first of two updates, starting downstairs where what was an office cupboard has been moved next to the new (and still not quite right) stairs. It took my measuring and two strong young men to move it from what has been my office for 14 years. It works in its new spot and I have already begun loading it.

J and K reassembling the dresser in its new spot.

Dresser in situ. Partly loaded.

The stairs are to be unpicked and rebuilt, and when that's done, it'll look better. I am still deciding what to do with that baby set of Queen Anne drawers. They could become my bedside table.

Gandalf, of course, steps in...

That was not the only cupboard that moved. The small wardrobe that had been in The Little Room is now on the stoep. For the time being. If it stays, its rear end will be painted white.

The last three photos show the two rooms that will become one large living space with a kitchenette once the dry walls come down.

Looking down the soon-to-be demolished passage to link the rooms and create an open space.

What was The Little Room

This will become the kitchen and dining area.

What was the office which will become the seating area.

They are still mucky but, believe it or not, marginally less mucky than yesterday.

The Stoep

There is still much to be done outside, but the interior must be done first. What will happen to that cupboard will depend on that. Suffice it to say that outside, screens and a gate to create privacy for all residents is on the cards.

Part 2, tomorrow. Or Sunday. Or Monday. Because, yes, that wasn't all that happened yesterday.

Until next time

Slowly getting there, and yeah, the staircase does not look very good. Have you thought of maybe a spiral staircase, as they are space savers?

We have a plan for the staircase. The problem arose because the plans and reality were different. Nobody's fault but it did set the project back. My guy has a mate in the trade who will work on them in the builders' holiday. He comes from a family of carpenters. Carpentry is in his genes. And spiral staircases are not practical as one gets older and having looked at it, they do gobble space because you can't put storage in and around them. So yes, a spiral staircase was among the many thoughts.

It is coming together. Things have reached a point where I can again offer a bed to the nearest and dearest, if need be, and by mid-February, I will take reservations from carefully screened guests: the external bits for total separation and privacy will probably not be quite complete by then. We shall see.

Best to you and Marian, Zac.

Ah yes, I didn't think about the human age factor, and a good carpentry joiner can work magic with a staircase. You are right about the storage space, as spirals tend to have none for storage purposes.

Yes, I saw that it is coming together, and I hope that you will regard us as carefully screened guests when we are in your neck of woods sometime again :) Finishing always take time, and we hope that everything will eventually work out for you milady.

Best also to you, and please take care.

I've been told on more than one occasion everything in a home should have wheels, tend to change our minds a couple of times being the reason. You appear to have taken a space and seen the outcome in your mind before you started, well done.

Hope final result of staircase comes right, appears to have been a bit of a bugbear during this switch over.

Thanks, Joan. Renovation don't often go according to plan. Especially in houses that were not built to specification, like this one. So, if this is the biggest blaps challenge, I will take it.

I do have a knack for looking beyind imagining things in new spaces and then take out the tape measure. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This time round because it's been a slow process and I am living in the space, I have had to change my mind and rethink things.

Thank you, though, it's coming together and I am getting more and more pleased with how things are turning out.

Good Sunday, Joan.
