The Sandbag House Reno Record - a little bit more of this and a little bit more of that, inside and out, in the sky and on the ground

It's been a big week at The Sandbag House.

In the "sky"

I shared my delight on Tuesday about the bulk of the roof having been completed and then was surprised on Wednesday when B and his son arrived to finish most of the roof.

Painted roof from the garden

We laughed: they decided that it had to be done because from the top of the hill, it looked so unfinished. Vanity got the better of us all!

Long St over the village and valley

Speaking of the top of the hill, above is the view looking south, and before you turn west to look down the road at The Sandbag House.

Down the street where I live - and my "new" roof

The roof is mostly complete. It's just the short stretch of the veranda roof at the end of the gable end that needs a final coat and that will wait until the exterior, including the window frames are done. Rightly, B doesn't want white and black paint spatter on his "new" roof.

Inside

Basic painting preparation has begun in the void.

Primed room 1

The jury has gone out on the exposed rafters.

Primed room 2

They'll stay exposed, but I had originally said they should be white. I'm still thinking that they should be white.

Primed room 3

One wall remains, needing attention because it is into this wall that the door to the bathroom must go, and light switches for both the bathroom and the stairs to its right. This also necessitates moving a hand basin and redirecting water pipes and plumbing.

On the ground

Today was about the garden and starting the process of turning the corner of the garden into something pretty and easy to manage.

Part of this includes ensuring that the irrigation dam is not confused as a swimming pool. Not even for a cooling plunge. My gardener has created a "hok" for the pump and today we sorted - thinned and dug up errant - wild iris (dietes) from another part of the garden to create a new bed around the leiwater dam.

As a consequence, the new (separate) entrance is also beginning to look less congested and more welcoming. I hope, anyway.

If more happens tomorrow which I somehow think it won't, I'll report back next week.

Until next time

Awesome when you see a plan come together, this looks stunning, I would however leave the wooden beams in their own earthly colour, sand down a coat of varnish to maintain the elegance of living trees.

We'll see. I need to maximise light and the light fitting is black wrought iron. Also, some of the furniture is natural wood.

With black wrought iron light fitting possibly stain to dark mahogany then varnish, white painted ceiling would look very traditional English of old. Your space make it work to make you happy at the end of day.

A great improvement milady, and that roof is now the pride of the town. It might even become a direction marker :)

Hahaha! Truth be told, The Sandbag House is already a landmark, long overdue for this face-lift!

She'll be even prettier when the rest of the exterior paint job is done. Simple white and black.

That ceiling turned out beautiful. What a relief and happiness it feels when everything goes as planned. Enjoy it.

Such amazing progress on the Sandbag House! You can really see the effort and dedication in every detail. I love how you share both the inside and the outside, and the garden is shaping up beautifully. 🌿🏡✨

Reading this update really made me smile because I can almost picture the whole process and how much work and energy has gone into getting the roof to this stage it feels like such a big milestone and I can imagine how satisfying it must be to look at the house from the hill and see it finally coming together in a more finished state I loved that little detail you shared about vanity getting the better of everyone because honestly that’s so relatable when you’ve put in so much work you just want it to look right not only for function but also for the feeling of completeness

The view you described from the top of the hill sounds beautiful too and I think moments like that really highlight the connection between the home you’re building and the landscape around it it’s not just about putting up a roof but about shaping a space that sits naturally in its environment the veranda roof waiting until the exterior and frames are done also makes so much sense because it’s one thing to build but another to keep it clean and protected I like how thoughtful B is with those details it shows care and respect for the work already done

I also found myself interested in your thoughts about the rafters because leaving them exposed already gives the space character but the debate about whether to paint them white is one of those choices that feels small but actually changes the atmosphere of a whole room I can imagine white rafters making everything brighter and lighter but at the same time natural wood has a warmth that can be very grounding either way I think the fact that you are still considering means you are really paying attention to how you want the house to feel and not just how it looks

It was also nice to hear about the new entrance starting to look less congested and more welcoming because first impressions always matter in a home and having a separate entrance that feels open and comfortable sets the tone for the rest of the house I know you mentioned not much else may happen tomorrow but honestly every small step feels like progress and keeping these updates makes it easier to see how far you’ve come since the start

I really admire how you balance writing about this project with sharing through different platforms too it adds another layer because you are not just building a home but also telling a story that others can follow and connect with it’s inspiring to see how love for both the craft of writing and the journey of building come together here

Definitely not! I write for a living so why would I use AI for my personal blog, and which is a marketing tool?

And why would I use AI for an ongoing series about my home renovation and which is unique and personal?

Check out my LinkedIn profile if you want verification. Furthermore, this is my website where you will find a blog about writing with AI.

Trust this clarifies things.

For some reason, my reply to @erikah is not working. So please see their comment above for context and my apologies for this reply to your comment.
