Spring: working on accepting different, if not new starts

Spring is springing.

The jasmine and plum tree are not quite in full bloom and heady jasmine fragrance wants around the garden. And, happily, the days are lengthening and generally warmer and mostly sunny.

Soul food.

All of it.

I am working hard on embracing that. It's bittersweet because a lot of what happens each spring is on the back of a combination of what had become our custom and practice and The Husband's hard work. Bearing fruit. Literally.

For much of the last two years, I have been going through the motions and while things grew, they didn't thrive. I wasn't paying attention. This year, I've tried to rearrange my head.

It works.

Sometimes.

So:

I am getting some garden loot:

A spring pasta of broad bean pesto: I popped the beans out of their skins and roughly mashed them with some grated parmesan style mature cheddar, fresh mint and garlic chives with olive oil, of course. Topped with shavings of cheese and a glug of olive oil, it was my garden for dinner. It's been a while.

A friend who runs a guest farm up the mountain, has recently been "taken over" a flock of chickens including hens. They're still young.

So, when she gives me newly laid pullet's eggs, they just have to be poached.
Last night's sort of breakfast for supper: poached eggs on green beans with a hollandaise sauce.

As you see, I'm also beginning to play with my food - and cooking - again. While I have had guests for dinner and entertained, I haven't had the inspiration to cook. And it's showed.

Yes, I have had disasters.

So, I have mostly stuck to cooking for one and most of those meals consist of what I don't sell at the market and/or easy, convenient foods that I can eke out and transform - quickly - when I need to.

Let's see if I can sustain - and improve on - this when The Corner's done and I can settle into my "new" space.

Until next time

When Spring arrives moods change, renewal is evident wherever you look. Great plated food it's great to see you starting to enjoy the kitchen once again.
