Creo que el estoicismo hoy más que nunca es un modo de concebir al mundo realmente vigente, y creo que a pesar de ser una filosofía que nació hace más de 2000 años, puede sin lugar a dudas arrojar luces en la actualidad para mejorar nuestro modo de vivir, permitiendo contemplar perspectivas que quizá no hubiésemos tenido presente.

A continuación, como bien lo expresa el titulo hablaré un poco sobre lo que puede decir el estoicismo sobre el dinero y la riqueza, y como una perspectiva estoica puede ser beneficiosa en nuestro día a día. Con esto no estoy afirmando que el estoicismo sea una panacea o una especie de dogma, como si fuese el único camino valido para meditar, para pensar y para vivir, ya que la filosofía más allá de ser planteamientos abstractos, son modos de entender y relacionarnos con el mundo.

Creo que a todos en algún momento nos hemos preocupado por el dinero, independientemente la razón sea porque deseamos más o realmente estemos necesitando dinero. En el mundo en el que vivimos parece que la riqueza y el dinero nos controla.

Frente a ese problema, muchas personas desean vivir vidas más plenas, sin ataduras impuestas por el sistema. Es por esa razón que me propuse escribir un poco sobre la visión del estoicismo sobre la riqueza y el dinero.

Aunque lejos de considerarme un experto sobre el estoicismo, creo que he descubierto en este estilo de vida una cosmovisión que vale la pena compartir. Quizá no compartas esta visión o quizá si, sea como sea, lo que pretendo en esté breve articulo es que tú estimado lector puedas llevarte un punto de vista sobre lo que dice el estoicismo sobre el dinero, y como para este modo de vivir, la verdadera riqueza va más allá de lo material.

Para el estoicismo la riqueza debe ser pensada como una herramienta, y no como objetivo. Ya que para los estoicos la riqueza material es un concepto realmente indiferente porque no depende directamente de la persona, y pudiese decirse que no es algo ni bueno, ni malo en si mismo. Ya que al ser pensada como una herramienta, se puede usar de cualquier modo, depende de la persona.

Es por eso realmente importante para el estoico cultivar la virtud, y esta puede entenderse como la verdadera riqueza para el estoico, pero, ¿Qué es la virtud? brevemente puede decirse que la virtud es vivir de acuerdo con la razón y la naturaleza, y vivir de este modo puede expresarse mejor dicho, manifestarse en cualidades como la justicia, la valentía, la templanza y la sabiduría.

Es bastante trillada la frase "el dinero no compra la felicidad", pues, para los estoicos en las posesiones materiales no se encuentra la felicidad, sino que esta es un producto de vivir una vida virtuosa y con sentido.

Quizá te preguntes en este momento, pero, ¿Cómo cultivamos una vida virtuosa? pienso que cualquier estoico respondería viviendo una vida con moderación y frugalidad. Los estoicos evitan todo tipo de excesos, y de este modo nos liberamos de las ataduras y las dependencias.

La riqueza como lo dije al comienzo, no es algo que dependa expresamente del individuo, ya que hay un montón de factores que no podemos controlar los que logran que consigamos o no riqueza. En la historia del estoicismo, grandes filósofos como Marco Aurelio han tenido mucho dinero y poder, pero, tal cosa no ha sido impedimento para vivir una vida con moderación, haciendo un uso responsable de la riqueza. Pues esta, debe ser utilizada para el bien.

Ahora bien, una enseñanza estoica relacionada al dinero es que la riqueza no es necesariamente garantía de seguridad. Si de algo esta claro todo aquel que se haga llamar estoico es que todo es extremadamente cambiante y de un momento a otro, todo se puede perder por eventos fuera de nuestro control. De hecho, de este modo nació el estoicismo. Zenón, el fundador de esta corriente sufrió un naufragio cuando era comerciante y perdió todo, fue cuando se dijo a sí mismo: "el destino me quiere filosofo"

Si para los estoicos la verdadera riqueza esta dentro de nosotros, podemos decir que esta es indestructible e inmune frente a los vaivenes del la fortuna. Es algo que nos pertenece y que esta plenamente bajo nuestro control.

Ahora bien, con todo lo dicho, pienso es conveniente mencionar algunos consejos estoicos para una relación más sana con el dinero:

• No persigas la riqueza como un fin en sí mismo. ‍
• Utiliza el dinero de forma responsable y ética.
• Cultiva la virtud y la sabiduría.
• Vive una vida moderada y frugal. ‍
• No te dejes controlar por el miedo a la pérdida.
• Recuerda que la verdadera riqueza reside en tu interior. ✨

El pensamiento estoico nos ofrece una perspectiva profunda y liberadora sobre la riqueza y el dinero. creo que al comprender que la verdadera riqueza reside en la virtud y en la vida interior, podemos alcanzar una felicidad genuina e imperecedera, asumiendo plena responsabilidad de nuestros actos, entendiendo que es eso que podemos controlar y que no podemos controlar podemos vivir una vida mental y emocionalmente más estable.

For Stoicism wealth should be thought of as a tool, and not as an objective. For the Stoics, material wealth is a really indifferent concept because it does not depend directly on the person, and it could be said that it is neither good nor bad in itself. It is therefore really important for the stoic to cultivate virtue, and this can be understood as the true wealth for the stoic, but what is virtue? briefly it can be said that virtue is to live in accordance with reason and nature, and living in this way can be expressed better said, manifested in qualities such as justice, courage, temperance and wisdom.

It is quite trite the phrase "money does not buy happiness", because, for the Stoics, happiness is not found in material possessions, but it is a product of living a virtuous and meaningful life.

You may be asking yourself at this point, but how do we cultivate a virtuous life? I think any Stoic would answer by living a life of moderation and frugality. Stoics avoid all kinds of excesses, and in this way we free ourselves from bondage and dependencies.

Wealth, as I said at the beginning, is not something that depends expressly on the individual, since there are a lot of factors that we cannot control that make us achieve wealth or not. In the history of Stoicism, great philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius have had a lot of money and power, but this has not been an impediment to live a life with moderation, making a responsible use of wealth.
