Drunk on the Past
I relive the moment
over and over again
whilst I get drunk on the past
nostalgic liquid
poured down my throat
I prey on the weak
images of yesteryear
stuck in my mind
in a perpetual loop
playing over and over again
without stopping to pause
I get drunk on the past
as I relive the moment
over and over again
without stopping to pause
yet I come to reflect
on the drunken words
in a moment's clarity
when the kiss of death
is planted on my lips
for the past is gone
and the future is nothing
the present moment forever long
a divide infinitely wide
I relive the moment again and again
in an attempt to get drunk on the past
Postscriptum, or Saturated in the Past
The present moment has passed into the future but we have yet to feel the present. We are perpetually falling into the future by always sidestepping the present. The present is an elusive myth that always seems to slip from our fingers. We cannot see the moment without reliving it from the perspective of the past. We get drunk on nostalgia, either for a past we lived or one we wish we lived. But for now, I am stuck in limbo or a liminal space. I presented a paper at a seminar and now I am waiting for my flight back home in a couple of hours. It is a kind of useless time, one in which I cannot do anything but wait. A waiting game.
For now, I hope you enjoyed reading this poem of mine. Nostalgia can be pretty powerful if it tries to.
