A friend of mine once said that our consciousness is the soul of a person when he needed some kind of explanation for who he was if he wasn’t his thoughts — like I mentioned in my previous post. It’s like the Tupi-Guarani native brazilian tribes explained lightning through their god Tupã. People use mystical or divine stuff to explain what they don’t understand.

The problem is, they do that even when their own religion, which is usually structured, detailed, and specific, doesn’t actually say that. That’s dangerous, because the person can end up justifying not only ideas, but also all kinds of actions, even harmful ones, as something that belongs to their religion. And then they have faith, based on their own made-up version, that they’re right.

For example, the Bible teaches us not to mistreat people who don’t share the same faith. Actually, it tells us to love and forgive, even those who hurt us, to neutralize evil with good and reach salvation. Matthew 5:44 says:

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Still, lots of Christians hate people they see as enemies of the faith, like homosexuals and atheists. That’s where the real mistake happens, in that abandonment of learning. The person not only starts believing in things that hurt others, but also betrays their own belief system, all for personal convenience, and because they think that if there’s nothing left to learn, then they already know everything.

In my friend’s case, the problem got worse when the different meanings of the word “consciousness” got mixed up.

It’s important to point out that the “conscience” mentioned in the Bible refers to ethical conscience, not scientific consciousness. Having ethical conscience means things like: giving back extra change, not littering, not trying to take advantage of people, and not cutting in line.

Obviously, if you litter, you’re not gonna lose consciousness, you won’t just suddenly fall asleep. The Bible doesn’t say anything about scientific consciousness.

Anyone who becomes self-aware of this will surely keep that in mind and try to build new behaviors that don’t deny such important parts of themselves.

Um amigo meu justificou que nossa consciência é a alma da pessoa quando precisava de uma explicação quem ele era se ele não era os pensamentos dele, como indico no meu post anterior, do mesmo jeito que os índios tupi-guaranis explicaram o raio através do deus Tupã. As pessoas usam o místico ou o divino para justificar o que não entendem.

O perigoso é que fazem isso mesmo que a própria religião da pessoa, que é elaborada, sistemática e pontual, não diga isso. É perigoso porque a pessoa pode justificar não só ideias, como atos diversos, inclusive os nocivos, como algo que pertence à religião dela. E aí ela tem fé, de acordo com o que ela inventou, de que está certa.

Por exemplo, a Bíblia ensina a não maltratar quem não é da mesma fé; pelo contrário, ela instrui sobre amar e perdoar, inclusive quem nos prejudica, para neutralizar o mal com o bem e alcançar a salvação. Mateus 5:44 diz:

“Amem os seus inimigos e orem por aqueles que o perseguem.”

Mesmo assim, muitos cristãos odeiam pessoas que são consideradas inimigas da fé, como homossexuais e ateus. É nessa desistência de conhecimento que cai o erro. A pessoa não só se leva a acreditar em coisas prejudiciais aos outros, mas trai o próprio sistema em que acredita — tudo por benefício próprio e pela confiança de que, se ela não vê mais nada para aprender, então não há mais o que aprender.

No caso do meu amigo, o problema se agravou quando os diferentes significados da palavra "consciência" foram confundidos.

É importante ressaltar que a consciência citada na Bíblia é o que chamamos de consciência ética, diferente da consciência científica. Exercer consciência ética é, por exemplo: devolver o troco em excesso; não jogar lixo no chão; não tentar tirar vantagem de ninguém; não furar filas.

É claro que, se você jogar lixo no chão, não vai perder a consciência — não vai, de repente, começar a dormir. Na verdade, a Bíblia não diz nada sobre a consciência científica.

Quem ganhar autoconsciência sobre isso, com certeza manterá esse conhecimento em mente e tentará criar novos comportamentos para não negar partes de si que são tão importantes.
