Let me begin by sharing a popular African adage which says "You can't stop birds flying over your head but you can stop them from laying nest on your head." This statement is really true for me. It's synonymous to how i consider depression. There are lots of things that would make one depressed but it lies mostly within an individual to make a bold step in order to manage it. Infact being a human alone there lots of reasons to be depressed but you have some latent power to decide whether you fall a victim or not.

what's depression?

This can be seen as a feeling of sadness or lack of joy or a feeling that keeps one in a bad state. Depression could be seen as lost of interest over a thing or when there's no longer pleasure deduced from carrying out a particular function. Depression occurs as a result of lost over a thing which hinders one from achieving a goal or fulfilling a task. There are different things that causes depression sometimes it depends on the nature of an individual. In the nutshell you can determine whether to be depressed or not. You can create your environment as well mar it with your hands.

Some of the things that causes depression includes::
Lost of beloved one, hunger or when you did not eat good food, the nature of environment could also be a factor, disappointment, unachieved goals, unplanned schedule, etc. When these factors aren't given adequate attention it could easily lead to depression.

There are different ways to identify a depressed individual.

  • Lack of concentration in a particular thing. Once you start loosing interest in something kindly check it carefully before it metamorphosed into a state called depression.
  • You're the product of what you think. When you keep thinking and nursing negative thoughts be assured you would become vulnerable to depression. For instance with the bad and crunchy economy we have in our dear country Nigeria, if you don't control your thoughts hmmm definitely you will get depressed.
  • Another symptom is what I called environmental factors. These consists of both biotic and abiotic components. Some individuals are easily affected by their environment. Watch out the kind of environment where you live, is it noisy, lousy, contaminated etc.

The big question I want to address now is what are the Strategies that one could deployed to cope with depression?

How to manage depression.

Since we have discussed the symptoms and causes of depression, it's important to know how to manage or cope with it since it can't be completely eradicated because everyone has the tendency to be depressed.

  • Feeding. Do you know that what you eat tells more about your health? It's commonly said around this axis that a hungry man is an angry man. I have heard several stories about people who died because of hunger. Like the present challenges we have hmmm some people barely take two meals a day what would become of them? They will start thinking about things which will eventually lead to depression. Please try and manage whatever you have and ensure that you eat very well.
  • Have a set goals. You can not be everywhere and everybody. You are unique and distinct with capacity of what you could handle. Define your goals and pursue them instead of focusing on other people. When you don't have goals for yourself, the you leave just to please others. When you have goal, it will save you you some trouble.
  • Avoid loneliness. You can engage your mind to critical reasoning or play good inspiring music.
  • You can manage depression by creating a daily routine for yourself. Sometimes we get confused on what to do in a day which can easily pissed us off. If care is not taken, it could lead to depression.
  • Always try to express your self instead of keeping malice and other things to yourself.
    *You can also manage depression by engaging in exercise or recreational activities.
  • Have time to rest. Sometimes stress could lead to depression.
