At least 18 killed, dozens injured in Nigeria suicide attacks

Hello my esteemed friends on the Deep Dives platform. It's been a while since I wrote here about happenings in Nigeria and other parts of the world. It's your friend @faquan, saying Happy Sunday over here in Nigeria.

It's a sad Sunday or we can call it a Bloody Sunday in North East Nigeria, Gwoza in Borno State as a suicide bomber detonate a bomb that killed at least 18 people and left dozens injured. The perpetrators have been identified as three female suicide bombers whose targets were a wedding, hospital and a motor park all situated in Gwoza.

Three blasts took place on Saturday in the town of Gwoza, which lies across the border from Cameroon, Borno State police spokesman Nahum Kenneth Daso said on Sunday.

“So far, 18 deaths comprising children, men, females and pregnant women” have been reported, agency head Barkindo Saidu said in a report.

Killing children and the vulnerable in the society is actually a crime against humanity and the international community should invest this ugly incidents and prosecute the perpetrators according to international laws. I also think that more measures should be taken by the Nigerian government in collaboration with the international community to beef up the security of Gwoza and the entire Borno State.

It should be noted that before 2015, Gwoza used to be the headquarters of Boko Haram insurgency, although it was later recaptured by the Nigerian military with the help of local vigilante groups.

In 2019, 30 people lost their lives in a triple suicide attack in the region, marking the deadliest mass killing by suicide bombers in the region that year.

Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), are the most active armed groups in Borno.Source

Meanwhile, nineteen “seriously injured” people were taken to the regional capital, Maiduguri, while 23 others were awaiting evacuation.

A member of a militia assisting the military in Gwoza said two of their colleagues and a soldier were also killed in a separate attack on a security post. However, authorities did not immediately confirm the deaths.

Economically, the insurgency in the Northeastern part of Nigeria is causing most businesses to close down while business owners are relocating to other safer places, making Borno State economy dwindle.
