A school building collapsed during classes in the central Nigerian city of Jos on Friday, leaving at least 10 people dead, according to a hospital worker, and dozens more injured, with victims still being counted, the country’s emergency services agency said.

A two storey building housing a secondary or high school collapsed today June 12, 2024 in Busa Buji area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The said school known as Saints Academy, had over 300 students whose classes was at the ground and first floor of the building.

In determining the number of casualties the state agency responsible for the evacuation said they could not ascertain the number of casualties until the evacuation is over, although more than two children have been confirmed dead. This figures are different from that of the social media platforms that recorded about 30 to 40 casualties that have died from the incidents.

According to my brother Mr. Izzah Victor who reside in Jos Plateau State, There were really a lot of casualties at Jos today. We were at Bingham Hospital today and a lot of people were weeping and mourning their lost children and loved ones. It was also reported that so many other hospitals around Jos metropoly were filled with casualties.

Sincerely, it was really shocking.
Some parents lost as much as 4 to 5 children.

I just heard that one of the women who lost her 4 children equally passed on because of her lost children.

Another eye witness Mr. Ibitowa Issa, "The school was old and built very close to a river passage. The water has been removing the sand for a long time and nothing was done to prevent it. Yet over 300 children are kept under the roof of old dilapidated but refurbished at the surface".

The Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has urged the medical personnel in the hospitals to ensure that they save the lives of survivors.

“They should not ask for money or anything because this is an emergency situation,” he said.

Sincerely, this is a situation that requires proper investigation to ascertain the cause of the collapse and if it were the fault of the school management who neglected the dilapidated building and bring them to face punishment according to the law.
