Kiss #113 (Real Life Scenario) COVID: The Life Changer
When you talk about life changers, it's not only motivational speakers that play a significant role. Sometimes, life experiences can have an even greater impact. I remember what my grandmother used to say: "Humans only learn from experience, not really from correction." In this piece, I will narrate the lessons COVID-19 taught me through life experience.
A Brief Overview of COVID-19
When COVID-19 started in March 2020, In Nigeria there was a total lockdown, but markets were still running. Schools were closed, as well as offices, churches, and movement was restricted. Only on selected days were people permitted to go to the market.
I listened to the radio and heard about people who complained of having the disease and were taken to isolation centers, but I never saw anyone who actually contracted it. The government kept pumping out statistics. I stayed home for three days before it was allowed to buy and sell in the market. If I needed to purchase something, I would quickly call my friend to help open her store, and she would.
One day, I decided to plan something with my friend. We decided to make a joke call, claiming she had COVID-19 while I faked crying. They then decided to call her to be picked up. When she arrived at the isolation center, guess what she found? An air-conditioned room, three square meals, and abundant water. But once you entered, they wouldn't let you leave because people realized it was fake, but they kept it quiet.
She made friends in the isolation center and networked with people. This was when I understood why the government was inflating the statistics. People longed to go there despite not having the disease because they were given preferential treatment. From this experience, I learned the following lessons personally.
Here are the lessons I learnt
Be Versatile: Don't just stick to one job; be versatile. There are other jobs you can do to bring in a little income, which can solve a need. Most times, if you beg, you realize that almost nobody has anything to give. However, when you have an extra source of income, you can sort out your needs. COVID taught me the need to be versatile in doubling my income. I am a mother of three and a health worker. Sometimes I realize my kids' expenses consume a lot of money, and it's essential to have an extra source of income.
Health Consciousness of Washing Hands Always: This is another valuable lesson Uncle COVID taught me. As long as we eat, shake hands with friends, and touch people or surfaces, there is a tendency to contact germs, which can sometimes lead to sickness even when you use a washed spoon. Maintaining good hygiene by washing hands always is crucial.
Network with People: There is a need to network with people. During the lockdown, I learned how to produce liquid soap and hand sanitizers. I would go to schools and network with the management to emphasize the need for them to use these products. I made one with peppermint oil, which felt very cool when applied to the hands.
Thank you so much for reading this piece, I actually know COVID is real although during the period stated above, it hasn’t spread very significantly.
