Health Tips for People Living in Flooded Areas

It’s no news that the rainy season comes with flood especially when there is lack of sufficient drainage system and rainfall occurs for more 4 hours straight up.

What happens? The whole street becomes flooded and houses are covered. As a health worker, I decided to pen down some health tips that could assist you in getting home safer (health wise).
If you want to know those tips, you are on the right spot, keep reading.

It all starts when you want to rent or buy a house, you should enquire from people around if the area is usually flooded during the rainfall season before you can make the decision of renting or purchasing. But if you have already made that decision without finding out lately, you can still navigate with these tips.

Before proceeding, agree with me that the flood water which occupy everywhere contains dirt’s, gems and all other bacteria’s from the drainage. It becomes a problem if the water doesn’t flow or it has to settle into the ground.

Definitely you have to navigate your way especially if you aren’t driving. What if you have a car and yet the house entrance is flooded with water? It becomes a problem to your health as well if you don’t pay adequate attention.

What are the tips?

The Car trick
If you have a car then you can drive down to your home safe.

Let your car alone suffer it. It is not advisable to walk inside the flood. It is highly risky to your health because the flood water carries its own germs and bacteria from different drainages. So dipping your foot simply means there is a tendency for the water to get into your body through the skin pores.

Back in those days were kids used to swim in flood and after three days or so they contact sicknesses. It is as a result of those bacteria or microorganism getting in larger capacity into the body. If it meets the defense mechanism weak. It immediately fights and overpower it which may lead to health issues.

Get a Disinfectant
Usually I would advise if you must get home that same day, ensure you have disinfectant which you should add to your bathing water.


It is recommended to bath immediately when you get home. After bathing, allow your legs be in the disinfected water for at least 30minutes. This will eradicate the microorganisms and keep you healthy.

Avoid Walking In the Rain
If you can avoid movement in the rain, the better and safer it is for your health because the atmosphere where the water condenses and fall back as rain is polluted with fumes from generators, airplanes, and even space shuttle.
All these saturate in the sky where the water condenses and fall back as rain. This is why if you do that after sometime you may likely fall ill.

Strengthen your body defense system
It depends on the condition these microorganism which are in flood meets the body defense mechanism. If it meets it in a stronger state, there may likely be a tussle in power and the body defense system will overpower it. But ensure you replenish the lost energy. Fruits could help you do that in combination with vegetables.

If you can stay off home for that day till the water gets down, that will be much safer because you wouldn’t have contact with the water. Microorganisms spread and travels faster in water.
