HOMEWORK: MAJOR KEY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The principle of personal study through what we call homework or assignment in other climes is an agelong academic principle which has helped to develop the culture of reading and revising what has been learnt earlier in the day in the school hereby bringing about retention of knowledge and application of what has been learnt. This is a way of helping the students or learners to have a second look at what has been taught earlier hereby leading to better assimilation and retention of knowledge because i believe that not all that is taught is well understood at the first instance of such learning.

In addition to this, homework helps to generate questions in areas not well understood which brings about clarity when asked in the next available learning time and answered i.e. it enhances feedbacks from students/learners back to the teachers/instructors. Also, homework is a distinguishing factor between the high flying students and the opposite because real education is the ability to correctly apply what learnt which can only be if it is well understood as facilitated by homework. The more reason that in some well educated families, they do ask their children for their homework as compared to the other climes which bother not.

One major advantage of homework is that it develops the reading/studying culture in children as children may love to just eat and play. But through homework, children begins to inculcate that great habit of personal study which is a major key to academic excellence at all levels. I strongly disapprove of not having homework again especially in this generation where there are a lot of distractions facing students/learners and even with a lot of absentism in parenthood compared to how things were before. "No more homework" will produce students who don't have personal study time and hence poor learners or retainers of knowledge.

Also, it will deprive students the privilege of inculcating the ability to focus and concentrate on a particular thing for a time frame without been distracted. It will also erode the feedbacks instructors, teachers and school will get in assessing the performance of students if they are really getting what is been passed across or otherwise. I believe that homework should be rightly viewed and revisited to its major essence/importance as a panacea to academic woes and failures which is alarming in this present time especially in some nations of the world. In addition, i want to encourage parents to always ask, check and revisit what their children has learnt in school and help them with their homework because by this, they will know if truly their children are getting what is been taught or not.

Failure didn't start in a day, it is a resultant effect of many neglects or unserious attitudes of many weeks, months or years in which homework or personal study is a key factor. Therefore, the school alone cannot do effectively bring out the best in these students without the family, parent or guardian involvement through homework.
