AFRI-INLEO INITIATIVE 26: THE EVOLUTION OF AFRICAN MUSIC STYLE 🎡

avatar

Music is the combination of sound pleasant to the hearing. Music over time has served as a platform where talents and skills are displayed as well as for value exchange. Music has found place in entertainment, informative, educational, health and economic sectors making it to be highly reckoned with. In addition, music has also found a place in religion, culture, ethnicity, profession and in other human related endeavors/activities which reflects how strong and highly important it is.

Music has been agelong with humanity since inception as we have ability to recognize sweet and pleasant sounds all things been equal. However, as the saying goes: "change is a constant" and in the reality of the present, music has evolved over the years in different regards with the same seen in african style of music. African music has undergone several changes from what it is used to be in the past even as it moved from generation to generation. Highlighted below are some major evolutions that affected african music style:

Source

1. Evolution in use of musical instruments and in music production:
African music especially the traditional african music with different genres made use of local drums, timbres, percussion instruments in the past which are locally made using animal skin and carved wood, but now due to civilization and digitalization, use of sophisticated music instrument is now the order of the day and even some are digitalised now. Some of the popular traditional african music genres have now evolved even to the level of music production. For example, the juju music, the apala music, the traditional african gospel music etc are now produced differently as a better version of what it used to be in the past.

2. Evolution from stage/live play or display to music recordings/record labels:
At the early stage of african music, it was more of a staged/live play or display especially by renowned musical groups/troupes back then. But now, the tides have changed as there are more of music recordings of such african music style/genres and sold as CDs, disks or uploaded to different music channels online. Back then, only few homes have the old music deck and also, staged/live displays have limited global airings, but now with the advent of music recordings especially to global music platforms, the localised african music gained global attention and much recognition.

3. Evolution in use of attires and local musical contents:
One major effect of evolution on african style of music is seen in changes in the use of attires and local musical contents such as proverbs, phrases, lyrical quality etc as known of african music. Africa been multicultural with high premium placed on use of local attires and use of local contents in music have experienced evolution as some of the contents use nowadays are not as culturally rich as of then and even use of local attires representative of the culture/tribe been represented is dwindling.

Therefore, as highlighted above, african music style has undergone several evolutions ranging from the musical instruments/gadgets used in the production to the use of online musical platforms as against predominant live displays and changes in attires/musical contents. Thank you for reading as comments and contributions are welcomed.

Weldone brother you really spoke my mind music is something that once you start hearing it most especially the ancient music you will just feel like you are far a sound

Music is all about sweet sound and given the best to listeners that it will speak sense to there ears as times goes on music has been transform in so many ways so I must have to say this that the evolution is a not a barrier for the growth of music but instead it added more significant figures and improve the standard of music

I guess we should all give a laudable applause to technological advancement because it gave almost all the improvements we now see in African music.
