The place of grandparents in society is so important that it can not be overlooked for any reason whatsoever. Grandparents are the foundation of every society and as such they must be catered to and taken care of. A family without grandparents will miss out on so many things. Grandparents are the carriers of the name of the family and they play so many roles in the family and the society at large.

ROLES OF GRANDPARENTS OLDER PEOPLE IN THE FAMILY AND SOCIETY

Progenitor of life

Every family has a progenitor. The progenitor is the beginning of life. Without the person, life cannot be born therefore, the foundation of every family and society is the grandparents.

Goodly advice

Grandparents are majorly known for pouring out advice to their children and their grandchildren. Grandparents’ advice is usually top-notch because of their years of experience in the world. They keep on advising till a life is transformed. Moreover, beyond giving out advice to the members of the family, they play the role of advising the members of the society on matters that concern the well-being and growth of the society. The consequences of discarding the advice viz a viz the opinions of the elderly are usually disastrous. As popular African adage has it “what an elder sees sitting is beyond what a child sees even though he climbs the tallest tree. Therefore, a wise man will always take the advice of an elder.

Holders of societal morals and values

Grandparents in the family are the ones who uphold family morals and values hence passing them down to the next generation. Whatever a family is known for, is attributed to the grandparents because whatever they passed down to the children is what will be passed down as well to the grandchildren. This principle applies to the society at large. The elders of the society bear the moral principles and values of that society hence they pass it down from one generation to another.

Role models

Grandparents and older people serve as role models to people of the younger generation. This function is a result of the landmark achievements of these men who had set a good part for their children to follow. Let us take Martin Luther as an example, he began a good path which was followed by his son Matin Luther Junior.

Discipline
Discipline is one of the cardinal roles of grandparents and older people in the family and society. Discipline is in the form of instilling morality in the children and showing them the right path to follow. However, some older people seem to over-pamper their children and grandchildren. This happens as a result of their love for them.

Love and care
This is the greatest of all roles of grandparents in the family. They are the epitome of love. Most times we learn to love and care for another from older parents. This kind of love is evidenced in gifts and protection.

Having known how indispensable grandparents and older people are in society, it is necessary to take time and celebrate them. On this occasion, children and grandchildren should buy gifts for me and make them feel at home because they play a crucial part in society.

Hello @ezemann 🙋

We liked that you highlighted love. Yes, when grandparents are loving they are more loved, respected and esteemed.

Have you thought about stopping by other posts in our community to consume their content and leave them sincere comments? That would be great, as it helps others get to know you and you can support them as well. If you use the same INLEO frontend, even better, though it's up to you. 😉
