The street sellers

avatar
(Edited)

Walking around the streets of any large city, you will eventually see some small vendors. Stands with souvenirs, maybe some homemade products, snacks, jewellery... And of course, artists. Some will quickly create a caricature of you if you allow them to do so :) But mostly, they will sell some paintings or sketches of the places you visit, often done on the go as well, so you can watch them if you have the time.

It took me a while to stumble upon the last ones. Right on top of the hill where São Jorge Castle is situated, there was the first one.
He even looked like an artist with the arty hat and an apron. The paintings were absolutely real - canvas and oil paint (I think).

Yes, there was another one next to this one that I did not shoot. The crowd there was terrible. Everyone wanted to see the castle.

A little bit further down, another one. There are fewer people and less traffic. He was sitting on the side of the road on a very small side street with a strong bend. A bit as if he did not want to be too much noticed. But a pity.

This one was also my favourite. All the images were very high quality black and white photographs. Really amazing job!

Keep on walking...
Passing old houses, streets and people that are less lucky.

The old woman was selling simple bracelets made of wooden beads and some small house decorations.

And you can probably already see the next guy. Right after the tunnel, another person and images hanging on lines.

These were extremely colourful collages. Very interesting, with a lot of recognizable places or items.

And lastly, not really a typical artist, but a person with a lot of selling skills :P

Right in the center of the Praça do Comércio few of the people were walking around looking for the next person to talk to.
There is only one rule here - do not look at them if you are not willing to buy, or say "nom thank you" a dozen of times :P
Avoid eye contact at all cost!

The paining had amazing quality and very detailed. From a distance they did look like photographs. But you could see it is real paint.

I wonder if they actually manage to sell some glasses :D

Hahahaha... "do not look at them if you are not willing to buy"
Oh, I know exactly what you mean... 😂

Btw. I remember when we were in Lisbon that we noticed a lot of artists on the streets... Sometimes, it's hard to spot them in the woods of these other, salesmen that you mentioned...

Thanks for sharing

Hahah we couldn't get rid of that glasses guy :D

There was another one that I saw, near the elevator, but I didn't take any photos. He was drawing large pictures just with pencil. Incredible talent!

It is a pity that many of them will stay unrecognized. Some are really amazing and they struggle to be noticed.

It is like a signal to them to approach and try to sell you stuff :)

The photos are great. The first painter's canvases look amazing also the black and white photos.
I was thinking that I never see these types of street vendor in Amsterdam city center - only people selling roses or tryong to get you to make a polaroid. Maybe it is not allowed. hmm

Hmm now I wonder why. Not allowed, or maybe the permission to do it is too expensive.
It is pretty common in Poland too. I often see them in Wroclaw city center for example.

It is typical at some festivals but it is not very common on the streets. I think a license is required.

If i do come across it - i will blog about it let u know.

LOL over here you don't even need to look at them before they come to you, some will literally give you the glasses and say "take it's yours" just when you are about to go away they chase you to collect them back😂😂😂

Wow! What a nice pictures! It’s true that you can find artists and different kind of sellers in medium-big cities, I love them, because they use to show a lot of the city life in what they sell.

The artists and the art they have in your post are stunning, very deep and high quality, as you mentioned. I agree with you, those black and white pictures are really good, but it’s a pity that the guy was a little bit hidden over there.

Haha yea he was hiding behind. He had a lot more in a little booklet. Really amazing stuff!

Yes that is true my friend. If we really went to the city or any crowded areas, we see many vendors selling different kinds of items, things or foods.

I've seen many artists selling their arts masterpiece and this is kind if good ways of earnings. We can earn and express or show our talents to other People.

As long as they manage to sell. I'd say it can be difficult at times.
