The scruffy, the narrow and the famous ones
Something draws me to those scruffy, slightly forgotten streets in Lisbon. They are hardly forgotten, as they are all in the old part of the city, flooded with tourists all year round. But still - usually there is less of them there. It almost feels like all the falling apart old walls are not supposed to be there. They just don't fit. And yet there are plenty of them. Small old buildings tucked between the renovated ones, just around the corner from some fancy pastry shop, souvenir stand, or boutique.
Always worth choosing the less popular path to discover the city.
The one below was some wall that was painted, but around there were broken bricks and some old fence. I dont know why someone painted the dogs, but it looks really cool :)
Dozens and dozens of narrow streets. Like a maze going up and down, some with some stairs just to make it a bit easier. Some will get you to another narrow street, others will lead to civilization with cars, trams, and stop lights. It's like constant switching between eras.
I am getting braver and braver shooting people. They had no idea I did it :p
And here comes the famous tram in one of the photo spots where everyone just has to take a shot. There are few trams actually circling the same route. One of the things one has to shoot when in Lisbon. It can be seen squeezing through all the scruffy and narrow streets too. Sometimes it looks like an impossible thing to do, and yet it manages.
The corner I was standing was uphill and had a strong bend. Not an issue :)
Plus it had a very pleasant view to the river.

I think what helps me is being fast with it, not looking at them too often or pointing the camera at them for a long time. Notice the upcoming composition, and then quickly take it. And in the rare event that someone just asks about it, you can always just tell them and offer to show them the picture and explain it.
And with time as you grow more comfortable, the less you even think of this stuff, you're so in that zone, the flow of noticing and capturing, that you have no problems photographing people and thinking of whether they notice or not. Most of the time people don't care, unless you're getting up in their faces or really invading their space with the camera.
Now that I think about it, nobody ever seems bothered by it. Maybe I notice the composition I want to take and look more at the surrounds enough that it seems like my interest was never in the people to begin with.
Oh yes, the speed helps a lot! Not to be so obvious. Shoot and pretend nothing happened :D
Something I look forward to :)
And yes, it does seem people generally dont mind. I just have to get more comfortable with it.
You'll definitely get there. Eventually the excitement of photography will just drown out the rest. :)
Taking pictures of people is challenging for me as well :/ I'm glad that it's getting easier for you! For now I don't have a lens that would allow me to take a picture from substantial distance, does the 18-55mm work for you?
Slowly getting there... I guess it is me that has to get comfortable with it, and not the people I shoot.
That's the one I usually take to the city as it is small and light - easy to carry around. It also has a bit of zoom which is handy. It does the job and is quite sharp too.
The dogs' paintings are cool, it is like an outdoor exhibition ;)
Did you find stickers too hahaha?
I guess I am not in the group of those "everyone" hahaha, I was trying to have any photos of these trams but I still have to see the photos from Lisbon I have... huge delay 🤦♀
They are everywhere now!
Next time ;)

Good morning dear friend @ewkaw
What a beautiful city, I love the period buildings, the architecture in general, its pedestrian streets and its cobblestone streets.
