The Dark Side of Nature: How a Flood Changed My Life

Natural disasters are sudden and powerful events caused by natural forces that can cause destruction, loss of life, and disruption to the environment and human societies. These events are often unpredictable and can have devastating effects on communities, ecosystems, and the environment.

I was once a victim of a natural disaster, my property was wasted and this situation nearly caused depression for me, the fear of where to start and how to start kept bothering me and nearly took my life.

It was my final year in school, I rented this apartment due to the frustration of my landlord, the man gave all the tenants quick notice without giving us much time to get a new apartment, this pressure was so much for everyone because we were all students and he believes that we have a choice by pairing with other students or friends, he deliberately increased the house rent in other for us to move out.

I was on the street for house hunting when I met this Agent who took me to check one lovely apartment, this apartment was so beautiful, the compound was so clean, spacious, and quiet, it was a new apartment according to what the agent told me, we checked everywhere in the compound and I fell in love with the house but something kept on telling me that the area isn't saved.

I met with the landlord and the lawyer, I made payment for a room self-contained, we signed the documents and I asked questions about the area, the landlord told me the area was saved from flood, but I didn't do enough surveillance about the house because of my desperation, I wanted to move out quickly before the stipulated date.

I moved into my new apartment and everything was going as planned not until the rain started falling, a day before my birthday, I was in school and I got a call from my brother that he is in my city for a meeting, I was so happy and I picked up my school bag and went to meet him at his lodge, we discussed and he said he would be leaving to am event in place closed to our house, he asked me to travel with him if I am chanced, I wasn't doing anything in school because it was on Friday and I would get the opportunity to see my mother, I jumped on this mouth-watering opportunity and said no problem.

We left the next day and he brought me back to school on Monday while going back to his base, I went to class immediately because I have a lecture, It was just an hour journey so I made it to class early, my course mates were talking about the recent flood that came overnight, I asked about the area affected and they mentioned them but my area wasn't mentioned, I never knew what was I front for me.

I got to my area after school and I saw that my street was among the affected area, I couldn't enter my compound, many thoughts kept running through my head, my mattress, my clothes, and my laptop because I left it on the bed before going to class on Friday, since I would be closing early, my foodstuffs, and the rest, I was so bitter because I haven't spent up to a month in that house before all this happened and I do not have any friend in the compound who would call me to inform me about this disaster.

I now realize that the landlord deceived us into renting the house, he renovated the house, changed the painting, and made it look like a new house, he changed everything and it was like brand new, I guess the previous tenants experienced it and ran for their dear lives, flood can make someone homeless within a twinkle of an eye.

Thanks to my friends who helped me with accommodation and some clothes to change with, the flood lasted for six months, thanks to my brother who got me a mini laptop for my project. I had finished the semesters and I was about to start my clearance when the flood was drying up, I went to the house and I saw that my property had been wasted, I couldn't enter the room, I only peeped through the window and it saddened my heart.
