I experienced gender discrimination when I was in school in my 300level, It happens that the formal departmental president came to our lecture hall and told us that the form for the next cabinet is out and who so ever that is interested in any pst should go to the bank and purchase the form there and he left.

The next morning I showed interest in purchasing the form because we need to correct the wrongs from the past, there are so many things we need to correct in the department, I believe we need to speak up for all this to stop which the previous president was unable to do be because of the fear if carryover.

I made my intentions known to my friends and they told me that was a good ideas that they are right behind me and they will mobilized people to vote for me which I was happy and satisfied.

We run the campaign from one level to the others, we spoke to them and let them know our intentions and the motives why I want to be the next departmental president.

On the manifesto day, a question was asked by one of the student that what will I offer as a lady or am I sleeping with the lecturers that all my list out plans are impossible for me to achieve if not that something is going on between the lecturers and I, I was so devastated with the kind of question he asked, I felt rejected and I answered the question with more courage that if it is a man, will you say he is sleeping with the lecturers and he couldn't answer me anymore.

My plans was to eradicate the issue of pre-requisite in the department because other departments had already fought for it vigorously and won, so I need to make it work for my department as well, that pre-requisite issue has been a bone on the neck of all student, if you fail one course, you won't be able to register for the other ones or else you pass the previous one before you can register for the next one, this issue majorly leads to spillover in my department and which no one is talking about.

The next morning after the manifesto, the head of department (HOD) called me to his office and told me to step down for my opponent which is a man, he told me that in the history of the department a lady has never ruled and the way he's observing that I had upper hand than the guy, I told him NO and made him see reasons why I want to run for the office of the president. The man threatened me that I should step down for the guy unless I do not want to graduate in the school.

Is it up to that, I literally cater for myself through school and because of politics I will have to spend extra year... Hell No, I told my friends and they said I should pull out, The man had already collaborate with the incoming president and increased the departmental dues and that started paying for unnecessary project in the department which all the money is going into his account, I now realized what the man was up to because he knows that I will not oblige to such attitude.

After the election the guy that asked me that offensive question during the manifesto came to me and apologized and told me it was a set up but he never mentioned it. Which I sensed it was either from the HOD or my opponent.

This is my entry for this week episode of #hivelearners community of #hl-w65e2

What? That was a really harsh discrimination, and in public. Indeed he wouldn't have asked such if you were a guy... What a life! 🥲

Well, I like how you answered the question, so much courage shown.
