Debunking Childhood Myths: My Experience with Conspiracy Theories
We have some conspiracy theories we have digested due to ignorance and the way our parents make them look real for us to believe, there are so many conspiracy theories that I have believed in the past and now anytime I remember them I will just be smiling.
There was a time my mother told me never to bathe in the rain or put my hand in the rain when raining, I was so skeptical about this theory because what did that have to do with a little girl who loved to bathe in the rain every time it rained?
There was a young man in my neighborhood that year who only had one hand, this guy was very hard working with his one hand and it always baffles me to see him fetching water, pounding yam, and doing all sorts of strenuous work with only one hand, I was so eager to find an answer to my curiosity.
I called my mother one afternoon to know more about this guy because my mother knows his background and I believe she is in the best position to tell me more about the guy, when I asked my mother what happened to Mr. Tunde's left hand, my mother told me that his left hand was damage because of rain, she said thunder strike his hand and cut it off, his story moved me and I decided not to bath in the rain because I was afraid of ending my life like Mr. Tunde.
After hearing Mr. Tunde's story, I coupled up and never played in the rain or bath again, I so much valued my life that I wouldn't want to end up losing my hand, who will marry a lady with one hand if I continue to play in the rain or bath in the rain, my mother instill that theory in me that anyone who put his or her hand in the rain will get strike by thunder and cut off the hand, this always rings bell in my head until I found out the real truth from my grandma.
There was a time when my grandmother visited us and I decided to ask my grandma about Mr. Tunde when my mother was away, I wanted to know more and ask my grandma if the thunder really struck and cut off Mr. Tunde's left hand, my grandma laughed uncontrollably and she answered that it is a lie that Mr. Tunde had an accident which claimed his left hand, I was shocked and couldn't believe my mother.
The next time it rained I put my hand in the rain and even bath in the rain, I was given the beating of my life that day because I am someone who gets cold easily, I always react to cold, catarrh and cough, these symptoms are never far from me, that was when I knew that my mother had to scare me with Mr. Tunde story so that I would always run from rain and never expose myself to cold. This conspiracy theory made me believe that thunder can strike someone's hand but when I found out the truth, I was angry at my mother for not telling me the truth and letting me realize the reasons why I should stay away from rain and not lie to me.
Conspiracy theory can make someone to have negative thoughts about things, our parents think it is a way to scare us away not knowing that we are going to find out the truth and always do what they have kept away from us.
This is my response to hivelearners community prompt of #hl-w131e2 which the topic is tagged Just Another Conspiracy Theory

I knew you were not nice at all. 😂. So you still use your stubbornness and put your hands inside the rain and bath after discovering the truth 😆
Lol is the way you went and try the rain immediately you found the truth for me 🤣
I see why your mum lied about the story of Mr Tunde.
