BREAKING BARRIERS IN MAKING NEW FRIENDS

avatar
(Edited)

I am the kind of person who observes others before interacting with them. Although I enjoy making friends, but I am not very good at it, perhaps because I am an indoor person who never interacts with others.

Growing up, my father never permitted us to have friends. He is an extremely strict person with a very serious face, not that he is wicked but he is a disciplinarian, he is someone who doesn't like friends and this affects me.

Whenever we hear my father's car driving into the compound after work, we do find our way, because all he wants is to see us reading all the time, so anytime we hear his voice the next thing is to run and enter our room and pretend as if we are sleeping.

Making friends is so difficult for me, I never know how to communicate with friends, I remember when I had a friend in my area, she would be the one to come and check on me all the time but I never had a chance to visit her in her house for once, this caused quarrel between us and she decided not to come to our house anymore and I did not bother to check on her, that was how we ended our friendship.

I tried to make friends when I entered the university, I clicked with a lady when we came to write exams and since then we have been friends, she is someone who will always call me to check on me but I never reciprocated not until she voiced out and she started to distance herself from me, and that was when I knew that I had to change the impression my father created for me.

I started going to her hostel after my lectures to check on her and ask how the day was, I began to find my way back into her life because she was so nice to me and very caring indeed, she is so lovely and has always been positive around me, I love her vibes and she motivates me a lot.

We became closer than before and I introduced her to my mother and vice versa, she is someone who knows everything about me, and can never trade her for anything, I learned more from her, I learned how to make friends and how to keep them.

100 LEVEL DAYS

My ego wants to take the good part of me but she made me realize that I should learn how to value friendship over ego, I do not like to say sorry when I am wrong, I love to explain my part and trash it out but she educates me on how to say sorry to make peace with everyone.

If I lose that kind of friend I am sure I can't see someone like her, I buried my ego and kept her as my friend, though I have other friends that I do talk to but not as close as this particular person.

I do not like keeping lots of friends because it can be a problem later, ladies talk too much and they always talk out of point and can never keep secret.

This is my entry for this week's episode of the hivelearners community prompt of #hl-w101e1 which is tagged "MAKING NEW FRIENDS"

NOTE:- ALL THE PICTURES ARE MINE

Thank God for your dad that restricted you from going out.
Ofcourse, that's how ladies are supposed to be trained 😅

Thank God you corrected yourself later on and learned how to be a good friend. Some of us grew up in a similar situation and now find it hard to be good friends as adults which also applies to me but the good thing is that I'm now making efforts to reach out to friends as much as I can, that's just the best way to maintain friendship

I wish I could overcome those obstacles, to call is very difficult for me, and know most of my course mate think I am full of myself because I don't chat with them not to talk of calling.

Hehehe. I also observe too when it comes to selecting friends to be around me. Same thing happened some weeks back at my PPA. This corper would always come around to my office but I never did until she voiced out that I don't usually come around. Funny as it was, I knew I never wanted a friend at that moment but for the sake of honoring her, I would go check on her once in a while and move on. Lol
I don't like making friends though but observing too is something that matters.

Here from #dreemport to curate. This was a very honest post and I appreciate you writing it. I am sure many readers will associate with it. It reflects the experiences of many households in India too, especially for daughters. Parents are sometimes worried about security and other times are worried about focus to studies etc. I like how you worked consciously towards friendship and I hope others do the same as having even one friend is so necessary in today's world. I am so happy you have a great friend now. #dreemerforlife

I can relate to you. While growing up, I had friends who visited me, but I couldn't visit them because I wasn't allowed to. I lost all my secondary school friends because of it; no one wants to be with someone who doesn't make an effort to maintain their friendship. That's why one-sided things don’t last.

I'm glad you found a friend who loves you and is always there for you whenever you need her.

Strict upbringing is good, but if not handled with care, it becomes difficult to get out of the box it places us into and affects future relationships.

Your Dad did a good job training you, you did a great job breaking the barriers and making wise choices.
I came in from #dreemport as a #dreemerforlife

I can totally relate to this. Growing up, I also don't know how to make friends. It took a while for me to turn things around.

Thank you for sharing.
