Book Review: The Da Vinci Code / El código Da Vinci, Dan Brown (ENG/ESP)
Hello everyone! I remember reading this novel several years ago because of the great repercussion it had, especially in the Catholic community, as it deals with the legacy of Jesus and who Mary Magdalene was. I never understood why people take to heart a novel that is obviously fiction. True or not its deductions, it is a book that I enjoyed very much. I love this type of religious thriller.

Recuerdo que leí esta novela hace ya varios años debido a la gran repercusión que tuvo, en especial en la comunidad católica, ya que trata sobre el legado de Jesús y sobre quién fue María Magdalena. Nunca entendí por qué la gente se toma a pecho una novela que, como es obvio, se trata de ficción. Verdad o no sus deducciones, es un libro que me gustó mucho. Este tipo de thriller religioso me encanta.
Synopsis/Sinopsis
The Da Vinci Code is a mystery novel written by Dan Brown and published in 2003. It follows the history of Robert Langdon, a professor of Religious Iconography at Harvard University, who in the middle of a conference in France, is contacted to solve the mysterious murder of Jacques Saunière that occurred in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Saunière's body was found in the Denon wing of the Louvre in the pose of the Vitruvian Man (a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci) with a cryptic message written on his side and a pentacle drawn on his chest in his own blood. Langdon must solve this cryptic message that the man has left around him.
El código Da Vinci es una novela de misterio escrita por Dan Brown y publicada en 2003. Sigue la historia de Robert Langdon, profesor de Iconografía Religiosa de la Universidad Harvard, que en medio de una conferencia en Francia, es contactado para resolver el misterioso asesinato de Jacques Saunière ocurrido en el Museo del Louvre en París. El cuerpo de Saunière fue encontrado en el ala Denon del Louvre en la postura del Hombre de Vitruvio (dibujo realizado por Leonardo da Vinci) con un mensaje críptico escrito a su costado y un pentáculo dibujado en el pecho con su propia sangre. Langdon deberá resolver este críptico mensaje que el hombre ha dejado alrededor suyo.
My opinion/Mi opinión
The novel is very well narrated and from the beginning it grabs you. This set of police thriller combined with religion in a way not seen before is very addictive for the reader. You start from the first page and can't stop reading. And it is that Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu, Saunière's granddaughter, take you down a path of ancient religious iconography that one ends up learning a lot about the past. The theory he proposes and which is the argument of the book is totally surprising and is centered on the figure of Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail.
La novela está muy bien narrada y desde el inicio te atrapa. Este conjunto de thriller policial combinado con la religión de una manera no vista antes es muy adictivo para el lector. Uno comienza por la primera página y no puede parar de leer. Y es que Robert Langdon y Sophie Neveu, la nieta de Saunière, te llevan por un camino de iconografía religiosa antigua que uno termina aprendiendo mucho sobre el pasado. La teoría que propone y que es el argumento del libro es totalmente sorprendente y está centrada en la figura de María Magdalena y el Santo Grial.
It all revolves around a conspiracy theory that is centuries old. The secrets hidden from Christianity by the Church itself begin to come to light. The lie on which its pillars are based threatens to overthrow everything known until then. Opus Dei is allegedly involved in covering up the true history of Jesus Christ, who would have married Mary Magdalene and would have had descendants who came to France, specifically the Merovingian dynasty. As you can see, the book has everything to be the success it was: the perfect combination of suspense, cultural impact and conspiracies that people love so much.
Todo gira en torno de una teoría conspirativa que tiene siglos de edad. Los secretos ocultados al cristianismo por la misma Iglesia comienzan a salir a la luz. La mentira en que se poyan sus pilares amenaza con derrumbar todo lo que se conoce hasta entonces. El Opus Dei estaría presuntamente involucrado para encubrir la verdadera historia de Jesucristo, quien se habría casado con María Magdalena y habría tenido descendientes que llegaron a Francia, en concreto la dinastía merovingia. Como ven, el libro tiene todo como para ser el éxito que fue: la combinación perfecta de suspenso, impacto cultural y conspiraciones que tanto le gusta a la gente.
Beyond the criticism it had, since it presents as true historical facts that are not (or of which there is no evidence) and historical, geographical, religious and cultural errors, it is still an extremely interesting fiction to read. Through Langdon's character we discover how the truth is not always what we have learned and the lie maintained by the Church is also the greatest secret kept by one of the most famous organizations in history, the Priory of Sion, of which Saunière was Grand Master. But the cover-up, unlike the previous ones, is carried out for the safety of the descendants of Jesus Christ. What will happen when they realize that the truth could be revealed?
Más allá de la crítica que tuvo, ya que presenta como ciertos hechos históricos que no lo son (o que de los cuales no hay pruebas) y errores históricos, geográficos, religiosos y culturales, no deja de ser una ficción sumamente interesante de leer. Mediante el personaje de Langdon descubrimos como la verdad no siempre es lo que hemos aprendido y la mentira sostenida por la Iglesia es también el secreto mayor cuidado por una de las organizaciones más famosas de la historia, el Priorato de Sion, del cual Saunière era Gran Maestre. Pero el encubrimiento, a diferencia de los anteriores, se lleva a cabo por la seguridad de los descendientes de Jesucristo. ¿Qué pasará cuando se den cuenta de que la verdad podría ser revelada?
The complex plot, the depth of the characters with their past history, the riddles they have to solve and that lack of time brought to you by the police chase, immerses you in a tension that will be hard to escape. If you haven't read this book I recommend it.
La compleja trama, la profundidad de los personajes con su historia pasada, los acertijos que tienen que resolver y esa falta de tiempo que le aporta la persecución policial, te sumerge en una tensión que te será difícil de escapar. Si no has leído este libro te lo recomiendo.

I am currently staring at my copy of this book accross the room, but I haven't read it yet. I have seen the movie though and that was my main motivation to get the book in the first place. The movie was one of the craziest movies I have ever seen. The suspense, the details, the analysis--all mindblowing. Absolutely amazing.
