The Awakening 4
Those cameras were not there a decade ago. What must have happened while I was gone?
As I took the seat facing my father's desk, Sergey settled into an armchair close to the screens.
”You must be wondering why I have cameras everywhere?” my father asked me as he arched his eyebrow.
”Did something happen while I was absent?” I inquired
”Now you care about your family?”
”Papa, I - “A knock interrupted me and my father called out to some named Dimitri who I suspected is the doctor to come in.
Dimitri opened the door and peeked inside the office with a look that seemed to be asking if it was all right. My father waved him in and he came in. Dimitri entered carrying a silver tray with medical supplies on it and walked over to us to place them on my father's mahogany desk.
Dimitri appeared to be in his early fifties, slightly lean, and of average height. Without delay, he turned his attention to my gunshot wound. With precision, he aided me in removing my hoodie as he then wielded a pair of scissors to cut through my shirt so he could inspect my wound properly. After he saw my wound he immediately began to work on it with gentle yet firm hands.
”Papa, where is Viktor?” I asked so we could continue our conversation.
My father became pensive and said, ”We were attacked and raided three years ago here in the club. The raid took place during the day when most of my men were out going about their tasks. I lost many men that day, I lost Viktor, and my safe was stolen.”
”What?!” I exclaimed as a renewed rage began to brew in me.
The safe my father spoke of contains all his business ledgers, his client informations, and if that safe fell into the wrong hands, it could be a destroy my family's reputation.
”Yes. Unfortunately, when this raid happened I was out to a business meeting on the other side of the town. When I was informed about the ongoing raid, I quickly left the meeting to come back for reinforcement, but it was too late. I found Viktor in a pool of his blood, his fingers were decapitated, one of his eyes was plucked out of its socket and his tongue cut off. Then I realized my safe was missing. Only Viktor had the codes to the safe. So connect the rest of the dots. It was like a massacre here, Solnyshko.” he continued.
”I-I’m sorry papa. I-” I proceeded to say, but I was abruptly interrupted by how hard my father's banged his fist on his desk.
”Don't you dare feel sorry for me! I will have my revenge soon. It's just a matter of time.” he blurted out.
I would be a fool if I thought my father would let this raid problem go away without catching the perpetrators. My father is everything but not a man that forgets.
”Do you know the people who are responsible for the raid?”
”Maxim Volkov”
”Volkov is responsible for the raid?!” I blurted out as I was vibrating with rage, but Dimitri told me to be still.
”Yes, he is and he thought I won't find out. It took a while before I could piece everything together but the wait will be worth it by the time I am through with him. Why do you mention his name that way?!”
”Papa, he is the one who took my husband, my sons and killed my daughter”
”What?!” My father said as his eyes flared with rage.
”I need your help to get my revenge”.
”I will help you free your husband, and my grandchildren but, you have to come back to the family, to your rightful position by side and I want something else too.”
”What is the other thing?”
”Don't worry, when the dust settles, you will know.”
As he reassured me of his commitment to aid in my quest for revenge, a fleeting sense of relief swept through me. Next, Dimitri began to attend to Sergey’ gunshot wound while I continued to plan how I would make Volkov suffer until he begs for death and death will be an act of mercy in his case.
Twelve hours later
Today marked the fourth day since Volkov had set the deadline for me to return his money, threatening to send pieces of my family if I failed. Much has transpired in this time. A lot had happened since then. I had successfully won my father heart back but at what cost? I am yet to know what my father wants in return for his help.
Before my father welcomed me back into the fold of our family and business, I had to undergo series of some unexpected test to prove my worthiness. I deserved it considering how I ripped my father's heart in two. Also, I had to fight his right hand man, Sergey in a hand to hand combat below the club. A secret underground where my father hold illegally fights. I had no choice because I had to win my father's heart back.
The fight was brutal, as Sergey didn't want to lose his position. We both fought hard. Being the stilt killer I was, I had almost killed Sergey when he yielded. In the end, I was branded with the family's emblem once more. Two identical symbols now served as a perpetual reminder that my father had granted me a second chance.
”Solnyshko, are you ready?” my father asked me as I tended to the Injuries I got during my fight with Sergey in his office.
”Yes I am. Are you ready to get back what was stolen from you?” I said to him
”Well Solnyshko, my patience has paid off. Now it is time to make my family and business whole again. I'd being in the shadows all this years. It is time I take what is mine” he said as exhaled the cigar smoke he had been savoring.
He then dropped the cigar on an ashtray, cupped my face in his large hands and said, ”welcome home Maria Morozov. Don't die out there”
