Lexie’s Interview.

(Edited)

Lexie had been on a job hunt for months with no positive results. She had run out of offices and organisations to visit. She began to lose hope. All the places she had been to for job interviews, they had told her they would contact her later but they never did.

How would she take care of her siblings? Staying at the shelter was not doing them any good. They needed to leave the shelter or they might be lost within the homeless masses. With her résumé in one hand and a hopeful smile on her face, she decided to attend her last interview at Wal-Mart. Her last resort.

Lexie adjusted her oversized eyeglasses, took a deep breath, and pushed open the doors of Wal-Mart with a sense of purpose. She was determined to put in her best so she could take care of her siblings.

As she approached the customer service desk, she was greeted by a friendly employee with a name tag on his shirt—Sam. He looked like he’d been working at Wal-Mart since the dawn of time.

"Hey there!” Sam greeted with a bright and warm smile on his face.

”Hi. I'm Lexie. I called earlier? I'm here for my interview.”

”You're right on time. Here.” He handed her a clipboard. “Write down your information in these spaces." He gestured to the blank spaces for Lexie to provide her details. She immediately wrote down her information as required and handed the clipboard back to Sam.

”Good luck! The manager will be with you shortly," he chirped, giving her an encouraging thumbs-up.

Not long after, the manager, Mr. Bradley, as written on his name tag, approached Lexie with a stern expression. He led her to a small cubicle office at the back of the store. ”Welcome to Walmart, Lexie. Let's begin with your interview. Shall we? Have a seat, please.”

”Yes, sir,” Lexie said, adjusted her oversized glasses well so it sat on the bridge of her nose and sat down.

Things started off well as Lexie confidently answered questions about herself and her previous work experiences. Bradley seemed impressed with her response.

”Since this is your first time working in a supermarket, how do you intend to treat our customers?” the manager asked in a tone laced with uncertainty.

Lexie impressed him yet again by giving him a response he didn't expect. Just as she thought things were going well, Bradley turned on a small TV perched on a table and her eyes widened as she saw herself on the screen, sneaking a candy bar into her bag during a visit to the store when she was a teenager and notorious. The security footage was crystal clear. She was indeed the one in the video coverage.

”Ah-uh, I-I…oh my God," Lexie mumbled under her breath, her hand covering her mouth.

Bradley arched an eyebrow. ”That girl looks familiar, doesn't she?”

Lexie chuckled nervously. ”I-I was young and stupid then. I have changed since then, I promise.”

Bradley sighed, as he tried to maintain a serious demeanour. "I hope you have changed for both our sakes because you are a remarkable young lady.”

Lexie scratched her head and said, ”You can put me on probation. I assure you, I don't steal anymore. I need this job to take care of my siblings, please.”

”Okay, Let's give you a shot but on one condition.”

“Name it, sir.”

“Stay away from the candy aisle.”

Lexie held in a smile. ”Yes, I promise sir. No going to the candy aisle”

Bradley bursted into laughter and she joined, relieved. "You know what, Lexie? You're the most entertaining job candidate we've had in a while. You can start tomorrow. Sam will show you how we run things here and by the way, you can go to the aisle if you want. I was kidding earlier.”

Astonished, Lexie said, ” Thank you sir! Thank you sir! I promise, I will not disappoint you”

”You better not. Have a wonderful day Lexie, I will see you tomorrow.”

Yayyy, a story with a not just promising but happy ending. That's pretty bizarre though. Imagine something she did years ago coming to haunt her in the most unexpected of ways. I'm glad she was given a second chance and yeah, if I were Lexie, I wouldn't go near the candy aisle with a ten foot pole.😄

...her eyes widened as she saw herself on the screen, sneaking a candy bar into her bag during a visit to the store...

I gasped at this point in the story! That was an unexpected twist. Poor Lexie. You build the suspense well, getting me to sympathise with her. Fortunately, she gets the job at last. Our pasts have a way of catching up with us sometimes. An enjoyable read! Thank you for posting your fiction in the Scholar N Scribe community. !LADY 💕

That was a beautiful plot twist.
I feared for her after the whole stealing incidence.
Those are really good people to give her another chance even having enough evidence to send her away.
