THE INNATE MOTIVATOR OF THE ARTISTIC SELF

I am a music lover, but beyond that, I consider myself a musician too. I may not be a famous musician yet, but for the purpose of this post, I will use myself as a case study. The very fact that I am not yet a famous musician says it all. The fact that I still love what I do, irrespective of not having experienced fame, shows that it is never fame that drives an artist. I am of the opinion that it is passion first; fame may eventually come, but passion remains the driving force, and it may never stop.

Just like it is in every other art, there are those who are really good at what they do but may never meet fame in their whole lifetime. Such people may never give up on their passion at the same time; thus, the reason for what they do is not and will never be fame. Fame could in some sense be regarded as the reward for passion, but passion is the driving force. It is always the foundation of every artist, and it does not matter whether or not the artist becomes successful.

MY UNDERSTANDING OF PASSION

THE DRIVING FORCE OF AN ARTIST: Passion is for me the greatest motivator of an artist. It is thought to be innate, but it speaks louder than every motivational speech that there might be. It is the self-conviction that whatever the art might be is not just worth doing, but worth doing well. It is that innate force that drives the love for practice and sacrifice towards becoming better, whether their is something to be gained or not. It is more like the innate motivator of the artistic self.

THE STARTING POINT OF AN ARTIST: Be that as it may, it most likely began with passion. In other words, it is most likely the case that one who is really good at what they do first started by being passionate. Though this assertion is probable, it is the case for a greater percentage of people who are good at what they do. Before picking an art (or a profession in general), one is first triggered by this innate love for that art. This first love is what I call passion. If it is well nurtured, the artist will no doubt experience massive improvement in a short time, and they will eventually become good at what they do.

THE SATISFACTION OF AN ARTIST: I am of the opinion that a passionate artist is satisfied with what they do. Though this may not follow in every instance, it is the case with many artists. If, for instance, you are a musician who loves what they do but has not experienced fame or substantial financial benefits from being a musician, then you should understand better. The fact that you still love what you do and even make attempts to become better shows that you are satisfied by something. But then, that is neither fame nor money; that, in my opinion, is passion.

Having elaborated extensively on my understanding of passion, my opinion on the theme has no doubt been made clear. I believe that passion is that which drives musicians (or any other artists); it is in most cases their starting point, and it is that which brings them satisfaction even when fame and money fail. Fame and money can, on the one hand, bring satisfaction to an artist, but they can never replace passion as the driving force of an artist. Thus, an artist is driven by passion in all circumstances. Fame is only there to bring some sort of satisfaction, a satisfaction that can only end up boosting or influencing passion. I am of the opinion that fame is sometimes considered as that which drives an artist simply because it is wrongly defined. It is in many definitions considered the opposite of passion, and that is the problem.
