Our Own Making

A few years past, it would not be out of place to consider gasoline generator the major electricity provider in most parts of my country. It was a good thing, but it came alongside a few disadvantages: noise and smoke. The rise of solar electricity might have kind of displaced what used to be, but it was, at the time, normal. The noise alongside the smoke from our next-door neighbour never mattered; after all, we were all in the same boat.

Things might have gradually changed with regards to gasoline generation, but not much has changed generally. Not much has changed with the ideology of humans towards pollution; mind you, I am no exception here, and you may not be.

It is the case that the human person tends to put the wealth and pleasure they get from things that pollute the environment before the harm that they bring. In our quest for electricity, we are able to sacrifice our peaceful and noiseless environment, releasing toxins into the fresh air all at once. Yet, it is probably the case that no one thinks about the harm that it brings while using a gasoline generator. The quest for electricity probably clouds our minds into not considering what should be considered, and that is the problem.

If only we became rational about it, we would realise that the pleasure from generators, alongside some other pollutants, can only last a while, whereas the damage it brings lasts for a reasonable period of time. In some cases, it even ends up putting indelible marks on either our environment or our health. Yet, it takes completely stripping ourselves of the pleasure that comes from its benefits to realise its harmfulness.

It is crucial to understand that the gasoline generator is just an example. Pollution is always caused by us humans, and we, in most cases, stand to gain from polluting actions, allowing ourselves to suffer the effects of our actions while we enjoy the benefits that will only last a while. As a matter of fact, there are so many more things to be considered: the burning of farms by farmers, the spilling of oil by human actions, the littering of our roads by ourselves, the burning of bricks by the brick maker, and so much more.

A man once said, "Change begins with you". The only problem was that neither he nor those he was referring to ever changed. Humanity has always been aware of the fact that they are the cause of their whole problem. That notwithstanding, ceasing this problem might end up cutting off some benefits, some of which cannot be sacrificed. In the real sense, it is not actually the case, since anything can be sacrificed, but humans, being agents of pollution, are not yet ready to sacrifice what should be.

It is painful when those who cause the pollution do not suffer the effects, and funny when they suffer alongside every other person, considering it a normal way of life. I guess I fall into the funny part 😀. You too should realise where you fall into, and begin to act rightly. In all, we are probably all at fault.
