MY MUSICAL JOURNEY
I am a lover of music, and I am also a living example of what consistency can do. However, I do not excuse myself from being a procrastinator. Despite being a type that procrastinates a lot, I am yet consistent when it comes to music. Funny enough, I have never in my entire life felt reluctant about music. I enjoy doing it enough that I do not have any reason to leave it for later; it is the case that I could practice over and over again without feeling bored or tired.
This is where passion comes in for me. People who are naturally deeply passionate about a particular thing, regardless of whether they are procrastinators, may not exhibit procrastination when it comes to that which they are passionate about. I guess this is the case in my situation 🤔. Yet, there are those who need to battle with procrastination, the great enemy of consistency, before they can attain a certain level of passion and then perfection.
Funny enough, I never saw it as being consistent. I was just a young man having fun and enjoying what he loves doing. Though time has changed, I no longer have the luxury of time I had then, but those casual fun times I had then made the musician I am today. I enjoy music so much that, even with my current busy schedule, I cannot help but find time to have fun; even when it means going to my church at night after a very stressful day to use the church keyboard. If it were just consistency, order of priority might have by now displaced my urge for practicing the keyboard. But that will certainly never happen.
Of course, the effect of consistency in the life of a good musician cannot be overemphasized. But this consistency is in many cases born out of pure natural passion. As a matter of fact, the people involved are always deeply in love with what they do. Just like a boy who loves football would not need any extra motivation to play every day, musicians who deeply enjoy what they do would not need extra motivation to practice consistently. In fact, preventing them from practising would be the same as taking away their happiness.
I and many others in my category are living examples of what consistency can do. Yet, we probably are not even aware of the fact that we are being consistent. Flashing back to the past, I am marvelling at how I developed so well on the keyboard by just going to chapel to play around with the keys whenever there is time to spare, and how I picked up and learnt the sax all by myself. Funny enough, none of these was ever programmed or planned; I simply used every spare time I had to do what I love doing.
