CIRCULAR VS GOSPEL MUSIC...
Even though I would always prefer christian to circular music, I am not the type that considers circular music evil or demonic. As a matter of fact, I listen to circular music as much as I listen to gospel. It could in fact be the case that I have more circular music in my playlist.
At the age of about thirteen years, I joined my church choir alongside a choral group named gentle seraph. Warning my friend Mark who brought me into the choral group the MD (musical director) of gentle seraph lamented that he does not need novices, but somehow I managed to scale through after he decided to give me a try. It was like I have always been a chorister and I owe that to the hard work I put in. Up till date I have been singing and performing in the church and sometimes places other than the church, I have even grown to become a choir master myself.
Generally as a musician, I have come to realize that music is good and as one who have practice gospel music I have realize that making music in the presence of God is amazing. But in all good music is good regardless of whether it gospel or not. As an individual there are times I crave for music that will calm my anxious mind and these music are sometimes not necessarily gospel. They are simply music that passes the right message at the moment. Some of these music can even be referred to as gospel music even though they do not entirely mention the name of God. They carry messages that sometimes bring healing to the soul.
I stated that I preferred gospel to circular only because I was asked to choose. That notwithstanding there are amazing music which are not necessarily gospel. From my experience so far, I prefer performing as a gospel musician but as for the music I prefer listening to, I cannot really tell since I simply prefer good music. Come to think of it, my best music is actually not a gospel music but it carries a very crucial message, one that makes me want to listen to it over and over again. Though that is with reference to what others may think since I believe otherwise.
Yes, I believe otherwise and my definition of gospel music might sound quite awkward. As far as a music passes a true and crucial message it can for so many reason be regarded as a gospel music. No wonder some choose to refer to Fela Kuti as a prophet and he is probably one. I would be stopping here as I would not want to digress from the topic of the week and despite all that I have said, it remains gospel music for me. I will choose gospel music over circular anytime if I am left with no other option than to choose.
