Christian Charity
What I will be speaking about today is quite a controversial topic, but nonetheless important. Regardless of the controversies that surround it, speaking about it is still of great importance. Inasmuch as I will be sharing my opinion about this very topic, I am open to corrections as well as contrary opinions. In all, I am open to growth as a believer; but I would need you too to read through with an open mind.
Where I come from, "morning cry", as it is being called, is quite a popular practice. For those who are not from this part of the world, I am certain it will be an alien terminology. Now, let me take some time to explain what the term "morning cry" means. It is an act of preaching aloud with a loudspeaker of any kind at the early hours of the morning (between 4 to 6 am) within neighbourhoods, regardless of whether people are being disturbed or not. It is always done with the good intention of spreading the gospel, but I see it from a different point of view.
Do not be distracted; this post is not particularly focused on the practice of "morning cry", it is focused on charity. As a matter of fact, I consider charity the foundation of our Christian faith. Mark 12:29-31: our Lord commanded that the greatest of all commandments is Love; yet the only way we can show love is through acts of charity. Simply put, the charitable one is the loving one. If this be the case, then any act that is void of charity is void of love, and it is probably not Christian.
In our everyday life, it is of great importance that we do not allow even our Christian practices to intentionally bring about discomfort to another. At the point where being Christian becomes void of charity, it is of great importance that we check again; it could be that we are, with good intention, not doing the right thing. A preacher keeping a man whose daily stressful routine has caused him to have only five hours rest awake, taking away over an hour from his resting time, is probably unintentionally doing the wrong thing.
Enough about the "morning cryers"; let us pay a little bit of attention to our everyday lives. Sometimes, it is quite difficult to realise uncharitable acts by paying attention to what we did. In most cases, it is about what we did not do. The "morning cryers" are being uncharitable by their actions, but you could be uncharitable by your inactions. Now, what is it that you failed to do? Our Lord has commanded us to love, and the only way we can be loving is by being charitable.
Do you remember the story of the Good Samaritan? It is said by scholars that the Priest and the Levite might have left the wounded man out of fear of ritual impurity or out of their preoccupation with religious duties; either way, Christ, in that story which he told himself, never excused their inaction. Regardless of their reasons seemingly being as if they were right, the fact that they failed to be charitable makes them wrong. In all, it is only by allowing charity to prevail that we can enforce love, and only then can we truly be Christian.
Be a charitable Christian today. Christ might not excuse you for whatever reason for not stretching out hands of charity to that neighbour of yours, and neither would he excuse you for portraying uncharitable actions towards them. Remember, no reason should stop us from being charitable Christians.
