GOOD AND EVIL

Sometimes I sit back to imagine why God, who is all-good and all-powerful, decided to allow all the evil that is. This is probably the most controversial fact ever; but then, I often console myself by considering evil as that which brings value to goodness. As a matter of fact, I am of the opinion that goodness exists so as to be an opposition to evil.

Though this used to be a favourite thought - good and evil theories, kind of thoughts - but it has not been for a while now. Nevertheless, listening to "Hello God" by Dolly Parton yesterday kind of brought it back. But then, I would not bore you with the argument on whether or not a good and all-powerful God exists. I will focus more on humanity; good and evil as it relates to ethics and morality.

If you have not, take your time to listen to Dolly Parton's song "Hello God". You might understand even better, given the emotions that that powerful song conveys. Humanity is in a constant war between good and evil, a war that certainly may never end. Come to think of it, it is sometimes quite difficult to understand why people choose to commit some grave evil, some of which they stand to gain almost nothing from. Yet, I am consoled by convincing myself that evil must exist so as to bring value to goodness.

Hello God by Dolly Parton

The most prominent and contemporary fact with which atheists argue against the existence of God is the fact that even God has commanded killings and grave evil in the Christian Bible. "We fight and kill each other in your name defending you"; those are the exact words of Parton, and she tells no lie. There have, of course, been times in history when the Church fought holy wars so as to defend Christ and His Church. As it concerns the idea of holy war, the Muslims are no exception; their understanding of jihad and actions that have followed in the past say it all.

I would have once again consoled myself by considering evil as that which gives value to goodness, but this time, evil is supposed to be justified. It could, after all, be the case that the religious man is no different from the serial killer who could give numerous justifications for his actions, or not. Whatever it may be, this leaves us in a state of confusion. Yet, evil remains evil; and goodness remains goodness. Even in this state of confusion, I am never confused about which is good or evil. And so, I will yet console myself by considering evil as that which gives value to goodness.

I guess many are like me, with complete awareness of that which is good and evil. Funny enough, that is the first step to making the world a better place, with the second step being choosing good over evil. I guess we can do it after all, even with all the confusion posed by religion. Thus, you do not necessarily need to be religious to make the world a better place. Even if you are religious, both Christian and Islamic morality espouse goodness, compassion, kindness, and respect towards all people. This might be completely opposite to the history of these religions, but it is in line with what is good; and that is probably all that matters.

Evil may never end, but you can become a bearer of goodness, bringing more value to goodness by standing against evil. You can begin by showing little acts of kindness, and by standing against evil where and whenever need be. In all, it is all about love😊.
