Where Does This End?

This is not going to be a short post, so if you want to read it till the end, you may as well make yourself a coffee, or a tea and enjoy it while reading my post. I mean enjoy your drink, not the post. Or ... you can enjoy the post too :P

The whole thing started about two months ago. I've mentioned in some of my posts, that I'm selling everything I don't need. This thing has been brewing in me for some time but lack of time has stopped me in taking action. Last fall however time came and I got the perfect (so it seemed at that time) platform that allowed me to do that.

IMG_20200904_111414a.JPG

The platform basically is a huge flee market if you will, where you can sell your used, or preloved items, as my dear friend @lizelle says (I love this expression by the way 😍). Basically all you have to do is take some photos of the item you want to sell, upload it, give a description, price and shipping method and you're good to go. This is basically common sense, the basics of commerce.

If you paid attention to the previous paragraph, I said all you have to do is take some photos of the item you want to sell. This is a no brainer as you have to show what you're selling, in order to sell it, but not everyone understands it, or better yet, not everyone wants to understand it. What's been happening is that cheap products from Chinese platforms (not specifying their name here, avoiding making publicity for them) flooded this place, which would not be necessarily a problem, but what most of the users do is upload the photos from the Chinese platform and state that the product is exactly like the one on the photo, which is a big fat lie.

IMG_20201016_100950a.JPG

This is a huge problem, firstly because you are not seeing the product they are selling (or trying to sell), you see a similar product on a photo, manipulated to look appealing to the buyers and secondly, because there are copyright issues, but the copyright issue is the company's problem, not mine.

Now imagine how these photos you see on online shopping platforms are made. They pick a lovely model, dress her up, take photos and then literally manipulate the photos to get the desired result. This means adjusting colors, making the model slimmer using photoshop, making the shirt slimmer with a pin in the back, just to list a few tricks, but the list is long.

IMG_20201127_104547a.JPG

Then you see the user uploading a photo with a gorgeous model and they say the product looks the same, but it's size 56 and the next photo wakes you up to reality as it is nothing like the clothes on the model.

What are they thinking?

The reason behind such an action is, that they can't compete with the original photo, the chances to make a better one are slim to none, so then why don't use that to sell what you want, right?

So let's take it step by step. First, the selling company is manipulating buyers by posting heavily manipulated photos. Then the user is manipulating you by posting a photo that is about a similar product, but not the one they are actually trying to sell.

Last week I met my cousin, who's in process of buying a car from Sweden. He showed me the photos and after a careful look, I saw at the corner of the images it said AI-generated. I asked my cousin if he was aware of it. He told me the background is AI generated. I must admit, the photo looked as if the car would have been in the dealer's showroom, but in fact it wasn't.

IMG_20201010_143214a.JPG

Some of you may know, I'm one of the moderators in the Photography Lovers community. From time to time we get AI generated images and when I confront the user with our rules, they usually tell me, these are digital photos. Well, digital photo is what you take with a digital device, like a camera, a mobile phone and so on, but not generate images with an app.

No one ...

The sad thing is, no one wants to see reality anymore. The whole thing starts from a very young age, when kids are taught to pose for the camera, to look happy in the photos. It doesn't matter how they feel, they have to pose for the camera so mom can post their photo on who knows which social media account for everyone to see what a cutie pie kid she has and all this to collect as many likes possible as there's no happiness without likes.

IMG_20201127_104400a.JPG

Then when people grow a bit older, professional photographer is hired for special occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and so on. Then you see photos so heavily manipulated, that people's skin has no pores anymore, their face has no wrinkles, ladies look 2 size slammer and so on.

IMG_20201016_101058a.JPG

This whole thing reminds me of a line Keanu Reeves had in a movie. He was invited to a very posh wedding, I think it was his dad's wedding and the guests were all millionaires, money was not a problem, so they could afford basically anything, even plastic surgery. At some point, the lady Keanu met at the wedding said his stepmother looks really great, to which Keanu said "Plastic is not aging". It was really funny, even though what he said is only partially correct. Plastic is aging as well.

Where does this end?

Where is the end of this? To what extent can this manipulation go? Why everything has to be heavily manipulated? Why?

I am starting with this line first because it just hits differently! Some people seem to believe living a lie is just the best as long as no one knows. They make up a well furnished facade, put it on because let's be frank.. that's what society wants, init?

This is why people go for plastic surgery when they are perfectly beautiful the way they are. They prefer making their lips bigger, having their nose done, and all because... apparently, it's better.

Speaking on buying things online, I always carefully analyse what I am buying because like you said, manipulation happens especially with the use of AI and once you've deposited the money into their account, that's the end of it all.

When will this all end? I don't know.
Would it even get better? I am not sure.

But what I do know is that a lot of people are getting lost in their online fantasy and made up realities.

I had a discussion once with someone from your country, and unfortunately you don't have the buyer protection most developed countries have. In my country, you can send any item back in 14 - 30 days, depending on the company. This has to be covered by law and I hope you get there one day as otherwise the state is covering up all the online schemes and scams.

Regarding the rest, I agree with you. Everyone wants to show a version of them that does not exist and slowly things are getting out of hand. There's a saying, according to which you have to take everything with a pinch of salt, but that pinch is getting bigger and bigger every day.

It is always written there that you can "return" if the things delivered aren't the same as what you ordered, but it is a lot of work. It is so frustrating that you'd wish you just kept the goods. So, yeah... I do hope we get there one day.

Once upon a time, I really liked one of the social networks, which differed from others in that you could only post square photos there. There was a minimal set of filters, and most people posted photos with almost no processing, photos from life, taken with a mobile phone camera. There were such life moments. Let them not always be successful, without observing the rules of framing and so on. And then they started posting photos from professional cameras, after processing in Photoshop and other editors. And it became completely uninteresting. The naturalness was gone. I do not argue, the photos are beautiful, at least put on the cover of a magazine. But in my opinion, there is no zest, no feeling of naturalness ... I do not know if this is good or bad, but I do not like it

I agree with you, there has to be some kind of balance, so you can see the photo still reflects reality. Over edited photos are not really photos anymore.

Yes, I like the word pre-loved dear @erikah😉 I started selling some of the stuff I was getting rid of when I first started decluttering. The money can stay in one's wallet if you want to build up a kitty a nice easy way of generating a little extra income from stuff one is not using.

Plastic is not aging

In that sense it sure is true!

AI is unbelievably spot-on when asking opinions on some topics, medical issues (Dr AI makes a very good diagnosis, so there's a lot of good going on, but one has to careful and use common sense, and not believe everything you read.
Oh dear, it's gone midnight here and I'm jabbering on!
Have a wonderful rest of the week!

Where are you selling your pre-loved stuff dear @lizelle? Do you have a local platform? or some social media group?

Funny enough, I've never asked AI help for medical reasons. Actually, I only use it to translate comments here on Hive and to generate stupid images for X 😄

Wishing you a wonderful week my dear @lizelle 💚

Hi @erikah, I sell on yaga.co.za.
The Yaga concept, selling branded secondhand pre-loved clothing originated in Estonia but expanded to South Africa, and one can now sell just about anything there It's a safe and secure way to sell online. There possibly are similar sites in other countries?
This is my Yaga store if you'd like to take a peek😉

We have a similar platform in Europe, called Vinted, with its address in Estonia, I suppose for tax reasons. As I see, it's kind of he same idea and structure, it's just that Yaga is not flooded with products bought from Shein and Temu, which is a huge win.

Awww, you have some lovely items 😍 I think I would buy some of those beauties, or maybe swap some of the items 😉

"Preloved"... I hadn't heard that before!😂...

Well, yes my friend @erikah, that’s how the world of online sales is, especially used sales… For some time I sold a lot of used and new things online, and I also bought used things… And believe me, more than once I was disappointed due to both, the descriptions and the photos!… And this is especially difficult when it comes to used vehicles like motorcycles or cars, many sellers are unscrupulous when it comes to “dressing up” what they sell… And well, as you say, this has spread to everything in our lives… just look at the “statuses” of many people today on the networks where people post their photos using beautifying filters!… Here people make a lot of jokes about it! 😂… And maybe it’ll get worse, for sure!

Good and entertaining to read article!

I suppose you can only believe half of what the sellers are saying, when it comes to cars and motorbikes. When you see the item in person, you realize not even half is true.

I'm glad you liked my post 😜 I tried to make it funny 😄

Have a nice day my friend!

social media is only to showoff & anything else...

It shouldn't be, but people are misusing it big time and turning it into a whole fake show.

Endless expectations are the reason of unhappy life...

That is very true @gargi

You speak wise words, and I didn't know about the mod thing lol.

You haven't mentioned internet dating sites, even worse than the Chinese thing, (I have had some decent stuff off them actually, the rubbish I return for a refund), a few years ago I hooked up with a woman after seeing her pix, met in real life.....it was like going on a date with my mum!!!!!
Being the gentleman that I am I fled as fast as my little legs could carry me LOL, no action for me tonight my little soldier remarked Ho Hum. lessen learnt!

Oh God, online dating! I've never done it and intend to stay away from it, but I can imagine what's going on there, although I don't understand it. I mean why the hell upload a photo that is not real? If you have the intention to meet the person, you're not going to be able to photoshop yourself at the actual date, so why set yourself up for failure and disappointment?

Funny your comment about kids being told to pose and be happy. I have a cousin with three kids. He always poses silly for photos. Tongue sticking out, crazy eyes, whatever. Now his kids do the same. And I always look at his daughters with a stupid look on their faces and think "why doesn't he have these kids take a decent photo" lol
