Visiting The Snowdrop (Ghiocelul) Guesthouse In Avrig

avatar

Last weekend we went to a road trip to visit the Avrig valley, with is a spectacular place. I'm going to write about it in details next week, so if you want to see some marvelous mountains, stay tuned. Today I want to pin another place to the map, which is a guesthouse in Avrig. If you're visiting the Avrig valley, you can't miss it, so you might as well know what to expect.

Visiting The Snowdrop (Ghiocelul) Guesthouse In Avrig.jpg

Checking out the guest house's web page, I see it is advertised as the ideal place for parents and kids and, it's a family friendly place indeed.

Snowdrop Guesthouse has superb rooms of 4 and 3 daisies and an apartment of 4 daisies. The guesthouse is located at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains, on the banks of the Avrig river, surrounded by a dreamy landscape. Here you can breathe the cleanest air and enjoy nature, its wonders, horseback riding and the best and healthiest food. Come to us to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here you spend dream days and discover how wonderful life is! source

How To Get There

The guesthouse is situated on Dj 105f, Valea Avrig Street no. 1365. GPS: 45.6777833, 24.4490017. It's easy to find it, you can't miss it.

The Guesthouse And The Garden

The guesthouse has a rustic design, which is prefect for the location. Usually people visit the place to enjoy the Fagaras Mountains and the view the valley offers, so a rustic accommodation is just perfect one may think.

It wasn't possible to visit the rooms as we were not planning to stay there, but the entrance to the floor(s) was open, so this is how it looks. Wooden stairs and stone like cover on the walls.

There's a restaurant at the ground floor, which has the same rustic design but at the time of our visit, no one wanted to spend time inside as the garden was quite inviting.

Opposite to the restaurant door there's this counter? I have no idea how you call this in English to be honest. You could ask for a beer here. It was quite rustic, or even Flintstonish if you like. (Negative aspect, the broom had no place there, but it was left there.)

Next to that beer counter there was a playground with all kinds of plastic things, like small houses, swings, slides etc. (Negative aspect, playground has no place next to a beer counter in my very humble opinion.)

The garden is quite big and spacious, full of green, flowers and not only.

There is a fountain in the garden, which is the main attraction for kids.

There's this wooden bridge, crossing the water, which adds to the rustic feeling of the place.

When I said Flintstonish, I wasn't joking. Look at these tables and benches :) You can enjoy a nice meal under these big umbrellas, while admiring the view.

There are a few wooden cabins at the far end of the garden, for those who like the minimalist lifestyle and would like to send a couple of nights in a rustic environment.

My Experience

First of all, we stopped there to serve coffee as the other restaurant, where we had lunch, had the coffee machine broken. Yeah, I know, but more about that in another post.

At first the place looks amazing, you think you found a gem at the foot of the Fagaras mountains but as soon as you spend a few minutes there, you start to see things you most likely don't like.

We sat down and in a few minutes, a waiter came by with the menu. When we saw the price list, knew right away that our visit will be short there. As I said earlier, we stopped by to buy coffee as two of the people in our group wanted coffee. I wanted to have some dessert, but when I saw the ice cream costed 6€, I said I'm not filling their pockets with my own, hard earned money. The simple espresso was at 9 RON, which is around 1.8€. I don't drink coffee for almost 5 years now, so have no clue if this is a lot or not, but based on the price list, it can't be cheap.

Another aspect that must be taken into consideration when deciding on staying there or not is the noise. At the time of our visit, there was a festive event going on, where the covered extension was (above in one photo), the music was extremely loud and you could do nothing about it.

They say it's a family friendly place, which, I must admit it is, but the downside is that the garden and the playground are both next to the guesthouse and kids were screaming and shouting all the time while we were there. The wooden cabins are very close too, no privacy there either, so if you want some quiet time really to enjoy nature, this is definitely not the place for you. This is going on each, day every day, so there's no way you can have some peace and quiet, while staying there. They organize weddings too, so imagine a day with a wedding under your window. People usually go to the mountains to escape the noise. I think we left 10 minutes after the coffees were served.

In my upcoming post I'm going to show you another guesthouse, where you can stay if you really want to enjoy the view of the mountains and want some quiet too.

I suppose it's a beautiful spot to pass through. Speaking of bad timing, I hate loud noises, especially when all you can do is bear them until they stop.

Then we're on the same page with the matter. Imagine going on holiday after a stressful year and get loud musing and kids screaming all day, while in vacation. I would explode 😁

The great views doesn't matter for you lol. But you have a point. I admire the photos but the sorroundings is not good. Too noisy can irritates me.

It is good as location, but not to stay there. It's too noisy, takes away the charm.
