Sleep?

(Edited)

Last night I came across a post on X, that made me think of the implication this matter has in a person's life, yet it is not taken seriously, or just a slim segment of the population is allocating enough attention to it.

I've been meaning to check my sleep for a good few days and even though my wristband was on the table every time, I still went to sleep without it every night. Who the hell needs a watch during the night, right? This is why I kept forgetting it, but finally, last night I did it!

Most likely you're rolling your eyes, thinking I'm another lunatic, gadget addict, believing every new theory influencers are throwing into social spaces and can't really blame you as everyone wants to look clever and some would do anything to get the attention of the masses, but it's not the case.

A certain degree of sleep deprivation appears in everyone's life, for some occasionally, for others more often, and when you're young (I mean a teenager or in your 20's), you think you're invincible, you can do anything, even go with a few hours of sleep for as long as you want. You can for a while, but not indefinitely, as there are consequences.

One of the roughest period in this regard was during my university years, when I had a full time job and was attending courses in the weekends, to be able to pay my tuition. During my masters was even tougher, as those courses were held in the afternoon, so from work I went directly to attend the courses, plus studying during weekends. Exams were no jokes as this was the toughest university with professors that have been kicked out from other universities for being too harsh.

Some of my classmates were living on coffee and energy drinks, which is the worst thing one can do and we saw the effects or the results before one of the exams, when one of them was rushed to the hospital, after collapsing in the classroom due to irregular heart rate and high blood pressure. I was high on coffee all the time as well, but not energy drinks or other substances. My strategy was, study as much as you can, or as smart you can, during the day and sleep during the night as nothing can substitute sleep and rest.

I've been dealing with some sleeping issues that got worse when my mom passed away. During the last stage, she needed assistance 24/7 and for a month I think, I was sleeping fully dressed as we never knew when we have to rush to the hospital or call the ambulance. Sleeping for a whole night was a luxury, so I was glad to get 3 or 4 hours of sleep without interruption.

As a result, I was left with a condition that took me 5 years to get rid of. Basically I would wake up to every noise, with my heart beating like a drum, my blood pressure and pulse to the roof and took me 10 minutes to calm down. I wouldn't wish anyone to go through what I've been through, but this is life and you have to deal with what's coming your way. Most people would have consulted a doctor, but I knew I'd be sent to a psychologist and put on meds as well, none of these would be the treatment I consider right, so I preferred to deal with it myself and even though it took some time, I succeeded on my own, without shrink and meds.

Now I don't have those symptoms when woken up by some noise, but there are other issues I'm dealing with, which are light sleep and irregular sleeping hours. I suspect the first one has always been the case, just didn't pay much attention to it. The other ... well, we all know how it is. The first and most obvious option to make time is cut sleeping time, unfortunately.

Without being an expert in this field, I know deep sleep is needed as that's when you rest and not only just deep sleep, but continuous deep sleep. I've been falling short in this regard and wanted to see if I got better at it since the last time I had a check. Yeah right, who am I kidding here? 😆

Screenshot_20260317_161804_Health.jpg

Screenshot_20260317_161825_Health.jpg

Here's the result. As suspected, I still fall short at deep sleep. It's not like I care about statistics or want to be prefect, but this issue has consequences. Even after 7 hours of sleep, I wake up tired and that says it all. It is not quality sleep.

You may also ask, what precision a wristwatch can offer and the answer is none, I'm aware of that as the only certified test can be made in a specialized hospital. One night sleep, connected to a machine that monitors a lot of things, but we're not there yet.

As I said at the beginning of my post, the post on X made me think of a lot of things and this paragraph especially hit a cord.

I've spent my career working with some of the most decorated athletes in history: UFC fighters, MLB All-Stars, Olympic medalists, Hall of Famers, etc. We have incredibly precise tools for just about everything for training, nutrition, recovery — but when it came to sleep, the most fundamental pillar of human performance, we were stuck choosing between a $300 tracker OR a single night wired up in a hospital so we could be told we may or may not have apnea and sent home with a CPAP machine.

Both of those options share the same fatal flaw: they tell you that your sleep is bad. But THEY DON'T TELL YOU WHY - so they don't give you a real plan to fix or improve.

You can consult your GP, or go to a sleep specialist, but apart from some advice and maybe some meds, they can't do much. It's on you to fix your sleep and only you can figure out how. There's no "one size fits all" here, each case is different and the solution, or cure should be tailored for your needs and can only be done with your help and contribution.

Sleep quality can affect not only your well being, but your performance as well and ultimately, can shorten your life too. I know, this sounds dramatic, but unfortunately it's true. You can shorten your life with a few years easily, if you don't take sleep seriously.

I've been saying I need to fix my sleep for a few years now and here I am, making no progress at all. My new lifestyle change is going well, but I need to take this seriously as well. Waking up tired each day is not fun at all.

Yours is not brilliant either, but you at least have some longer periods of deep sleep.

True. But I am not really ready to attack the day xD

Funny to see how all of your REM sleep is in the beginning of the night and mine is scattered throughout :D

Yeah, that is funny indeed, but look at this. I had another test last night and this is what I got.

So finally my deep sleep is normal, I woke up more rested, except my eyes, but that's a different story. However, look at my REM sleep. All over the place like yours, but the app says everything is normal.

Uhh, yes your REM does look more consistent, which good! :D
Seems like a fairly fine/average sleeping night :D

As long as your REM is sleep is above 1h 20min, it should be a good night, from what I have been reading online.

Most screenshots looks broken at the moment when uploaded, but it looks fine when its publish :D

I need to monitor it and see what can do to improve it. One thing I need to do is get more sleep before midnight, which they say is crucial, but not easy to achieve 🤪

Regardless, I need to try 😬

Always before midnight is a good idea yes haha xD

Honestly. No screens 1 hour before bed time, is crucial if you ask me.
Thats properly the biggest one for me at least xD

Yeah, and me who is falling asleep watching TV ... 😬🙈

After this post and the conversations, I was thinking of starting a sleep diary, to see what works and how I can make it better

My parents have told me they also fall asleep infront of the tv xD

What are you using to track it with?

I have an old Honor Band 5-9EC. Was thinking of buying a Samsung watch as my phone is Samsung, but I don't think I will a it's waste of money 😬 Time is the same on both and neither will fix my sleep, so ... why waste more money 😂

I dont even know that band, but as long as it works :D
100%, the Samsung Watch will not help you sleep xD

I have an Oura Ring 2, I have been looking for a Band, but I dont want a subscription on top xD

Yeah, those won't fix your sleep either 😆 Knowing what's wrong is not a solution yet, so why fill their pocket.

If I want a perfect sleep. I need to be in bed 10 hours before I have to wake, because I twist & turn so much and over think everything for first 30 min to 60 min xD

I know that feeling. We have spoken lately a lot about age and this is a side effect of it.
We had a sleep monitor app on our iphone connected to the watch and each morning I did check how my sleep was. And regardless what I did to improve it, it more or less stayed the same. So, some things are just like they are.
Lots of things which do have a impact on sleep, like alcohol consumption, caffeine, to much bright light and so on.
Also I used to be able to sleep out when I had the chance, but those times are also gone :(. Hate when I wake up at 8 on a Saturday in which I could sleep until 9 or 9.30. I just can't anymore.

This is a similar sleep monitoring app. I used to do 1 week monitoring, but never once have I got a good result.

Hate when I wake up at 8 on a Saturday in which I could sleep until 9 or 9.30. I just can't anymore.

You're lucky and it seems you don't know it 😆 I wake up at 7am or even 6am during summer, no matter when I go to bed in the evening. This has been going on forever. When I was in my 20's, I got home at 5 from a party, went to bed and woke up at 8am.

I need to find a way to be able to rest.

A familiar situation — not much really helps improve sleep. I think the psycho-emotional state probably has a strong influence on it, at least in my case.
Sometimes calm walks in the fresh air for about half an hour before bed helped me. But in a big city, peaceful walks are almost impossible.

Yes, that too, among others, the list is long.

You're right about that. Imagine those living close to a road or in a noisy neighborhood.

Now I would be interested to check my stats too on the sleep... I used to have good quality, a deep sleep and wake up rested, but since the kid not anymore, I'm always on a rush, wake in the night if he's sick, wake early the morning cause kids do this, school problems etc, the stress basically keeps my brain always awake and never fully rests... So I can feel you sort of, if I'd go to the doc, like for you, they'd send to a psychologist or give meds which give addiction and other problems

Exactly! That's the easiest thing to do for them and you get some results short term, but addiction kicks in and then what? That's a solution for them, but not for me.

I've been trying some homeopathy, like hawthorn, should help with blood pressure too

My blood pressure at the time of writing is 113/72, pulse 63, soooo, if hawthorn lowers it, I'm in a deep 💩 😆

I wouldn't mind trying out some tea, that helps me with deep sleep though.

I don't feel like my Garmin measures my sleep very good. However, I had to do a sleep study a while ago and I have obstructive sleep apnea, so I use a CPAP machine now and I think that measures my quality of sleep better than my watch. That being said, I still read my sleep review every morning on my watch :)

As I said in my post, you can't expect precision from a watch, but the next option is a proper lab test, so ... a watch is something too.

Sleep apnea is a very serious problem and needs attention.

You know, I thought was just a scam at first. It seems like a lot of people are getting diagnosed with it these days and I thought it was just a away for them to make more money because the machines and the supplies are not cheap, but then I started having panic attacks because I would stop breathing at night, and now I appreciate it a bit more.

I don't know a lot bout it to be honest, but I know it's very serious. First time I heard about it was in a weight loss show, where an obese guy said he has it and can only sleep in a chair and assisted by an oxygen mask. After that, I've seen many are dealing with and also how serious it is.

It's possible it's not justified in every case due to the machines and the supplies being a good business, but I think those cases are rare.

Must be terrible to have these panic attacks. I hope you can deal with it and have quiet nights.

I used to have them quite frequently. I have only had one since I started using my CPAP machine over a year ago now. Which is much better. My wife loves it because I snore less now and I am much less tired than I used to be. I was hoping it might give my metabolism a kick start, but that doesn't seem to have happened yet :P

I’m sorry you had to go through that, Erikah. Thanks to the Universe, you found the strength and courage to overcome it on your own.
Sleep is important… and it has much to do with being inwardly in harmony. Life is always full of challenges and moments that unsettle us, and it takes strength and courage to flow with it.

A hug.

Thank you @nanixxx. It happens, this is life but I'm not complaining as I've been able to overcome it without shrinks and meds.

A hug to you too and a lot of strength to handle the situation in your country.
