Outsider Art - An Unusual Art Exhibition

avatar

Every photo shoot is unusual basically, but not in a same way. The name of the exhibition was Outsider Art, which most likely sounds strange from many points of view, but if you bear with me for a moment, I'll try to explain to you why the name.

Most people, when hearing the word "Art", think of famous artists, who's artworks are forged and worth killing for. Some of the artist fit this category, others have become famous only postmortem and had suffered all their life in poverty in misery and other artists will never be famous. This is life.

When I saw the artworks, I knew this is not an usual one as the these artworks were nothing close to what I'm used to seeing in the galleries, and soon I found out why. The exhibition was displaying the artworks of an art camp organized for disabled people. We don't know what disability they are living with but the title, Outsider Art fits in perfectly. Unfortunately so many times people with disabilities are outsiders, rejected by society and chances for them are not many.

The exhibition was hosted by a café, which is giving a chance to the less fortunate people to work. They hire disabled people, which is an amazing initiative. They need to earn a living as state support is never enough, so having this opportunity is like a helping hand.

every single coffee made with heart

No fancy banner or advertising, a colorful chair is waiting for you and inviting you in. I must admit, I only visited the lobby, or the porch, where the artworks were exhibited, because inside the café there was an event going on, crowd was sitting and listening to the speaker and I didn't want to disturb.

This piece swept me off my feet honestly. It's not the first time I see these faces made of clay and not the last, but knowing this was made by disabled people makes it more special. There was no title, so it was left to the viewer to decide what they are seeing, but I see a family tree maybe?

Look at these faces, how can you not appreciate the work behind them?

20250829_130957a.jpg

As I mentioned previously, we don't know the age of the artists, or what disability they are living. This painting could have been made by a kid or an adult, we don't know, but I can appreciate the effort.

I would choose the wooden sculptures from here.

20250829_131031a.jpg

The particularity of this painting is that it was painted on cardboard. Not a usual one, but a nice one.

A different painting from the same author.

There were these small ones, painted on glass. Unfortunately they were displayed on the ledge and the background tales away a lot as you can't see them properly. However, you can see the inner courtyard, where you can sit down, enjoy your coffee and brioche.

A blond or a white haired lady, a simple buy nice painting.

20250829_131119a.jpg

This was a bit too ... modern for me, but it's a nice concept.

20250829_131127a.JPG

I suppose the bottom one was made during, or after covid, you can see why.

20250829_131143a.jpg

A wreath with colorful fruits or flowers, can't tell exactly.

20250829_131152a.jpg

This was painted in 2014, a very colorful one, but I loved it. This association was born in 2010, so I suppose they have a nice collection of works already.

Sorry for the gas pipes and meters, but this place was built more than a century ago and it was never meant to be a gallery.

Now that you've seen all the artworks and also know who painted it, what do you think?

I think it's pretty amazing. I'm not saying I would hang everything on my wall, but would definitely be happy to own the first one, the faces on wood.

I love outsider art.

It's fun to see what others can think up and many times some great surprises. Of course that goes for all art pretty much I suppose.

They are incredible works, I liked them a lot, the way in which each of them tells a story is fascinating, and what certainly more master of art.

Thanks for sharing them with us. And for immortalizing them on the web3.

They definitely deserve a place on web3. I really appreciate their effort and the outcome is great.

It is nice that the café gives space for these works and also supports people with disabilities by offering them jobs. It feels very honest and warm, without banners or advertising, just art and coffee. Thank you for sharing this exhibition.

I don't know if it's a regular thing or it is just a one time thing, but it's really nice to give them a chance.

Yeah, any help these people can get is welcomed.

Nagy had 2 pieces. Which one are you referring to?

Yes, this is interesting, also because he chose to paint white on black. I'm not saying no one does that, but it's rare.

Yep exactly, not many black and white paintings around but this choice suits very well here

Yes and for me it's more valuable as he chose cardboard to paint on, which is more difficult to use as a medium as paper absorbs the paint, so you have to work fast and know how much paint to apply.

Definitely, this art exhibition becomes even more valuable when you know that the artists are people with disabilities. No doubt, there is talent here, but other works look unfinished, drawn by children or beginners. Perhaps this group has genuine talent and has never studied art. Thank you for this look at Marginal Art.

You're right, the value lies in their ability to create art when living with disabilities. It should be practiced more and organizations should focus on this.

Perhaps this group has genuine talent and has never studied art.

I don't know anything for certain but I don't think any of them has studied art.

I loved seeing these works by such special people, because it's true that many people marginalise them, yet they have done wonderful things.

My favourites are the faces at the beginning, which reminded me of a family tree. I once worked with clay and it is quite complicated. Those faces are beautiful. Then the crown of flowers like buds is very beautiful and, of course, the painting of the eye near the pipes. I always like eyes!

A moving display of art. Thank you for bringing it.🤗

I remember there was a time when clay art was everywhere and you could see all kinds of faces, boots and statuettes. You can still see them at fairs and occasionally at exhibitions.

I've never worked with clay but I've always wanted try out pottery and never did.

I'm surprised to learn you like eyes. I don't really like them as they are looking at me 😆
