📚 Book Review: The Road [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy les vengo a traer mi reseña acerca de un libro postapocalíptico que leí hace poco y me resultó muy bueno, pero crudo. Les estoy hablando de La carretera del autor Cormac McCarthy.

Hello, readers! Today I'm bringing you my review of a post-apocalyptic book that I read recently and found to be very good, but raw. I'm talking about The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

En esta historia seguiremos a un padre y su hijo que intentan sobrevivir en un mundo arrasado por alguna catástrofe. Los días parecen sucederse los unos a los otros, con el único objetivo de encontrar comida y lograr seguir con vida un día más. En su recorrido por la carretera se van a encontrar con diferentes obstáculos y personas no tan buenas que intentarán sacarles lo poco que tienen y quizá mucho más de lo que se piensa.

In this story, we follow a father and son trying to survive in a world ravaged by some catastrophe. The days seem to pass one after another, their sole objective being to find food and stay alive for another day. Along their journey on the road, they will encounter various obstacles and unsavory characters who will try to take what little they have, and perhaps much more than they realize.

Es un libro con una historia muy dura de leer. Me sorprendió para bien, ya que la había empezado a leer porque alguien dijo que era como The Walking Dead, así que me imagine una historia de zombies en cierto punto (soy fan), pero al final comprendí que lo que quiso decir esa persona es que estaban sumergidos en un mundo apocalíptico intentando sobrevivir con lo poco que tenían. No, no hay zombies, aunque hay varios caminantes famélicos que harán lo que sea por conseguir un poco de comida, incluso recurrir al canibalismo.

It's a book with a very tough story to read. I was pleasantly surprised, since I started reading it because someone said it was like The Walking Dead, so I imagined a zombie story at some point (I'm a fan), but in the end I understood that what that person meant was that they were immersed in an apocalyptic world trying to survive with what little they had. No, there aren't any zombies, although there are several starving walkers who will do anything to get a little food, even resorting to cannibalism.

Así que por un lado me sentí algo decepcionada, pero por el otro vi que el libro es oro puro. Una historia muy buena de verdad, aunque no es para cualquiera por su crudeza. Todo transcurre por la carretera, aunque también se internan en las ciudades y los bosques en busca de comida y cualquier cosa que les pueda ser útil y deberán atravesar muchos obstáculos para conseguirla, pero nunca será suficiente para satisfacerlos, es desesperante de leer por momentos.

So, on the one hand, I felt somewhat disappointed, but on the other, I realized the book is pure gold. A truly excellent story, though not for everyone due to its harshness. Everything unfolds on the road, though they also venture into cities and forests in search of food and anything else that might be useful. They must overcome many obstacles to obtain it, but it's never enough to satisfy them; it's agonizing to read at times.

Los protagonistas van a pasar por situaciones extremas que me hacen replantear todo el tiempo lo que es capaz de resistir el ser humano en situaciones críticas. Algo curioso de la historia es que nunca sabemos dónde están situados, ni hace cuánto que están vagando de esta manera. Creo que el apocalipsis empezó un poco antes de que naciera el chico, pero nunca nos dicen qué edad tiene él, ni tampoco lo sabe el padre porque ya hace mucho que perdieron la noción del tiempo y eso me parece muy real. Me imagino que cuando vives un hecho similar dejas de tener noción del espacio y del tiempo, los años y las estaciones corren, pero no sabes muy bien cuánto tiempo llevas de esta manera.

The protagonists go through extreme situations that constantly make me question what human beings are capable of enduring in critical circumstances. One curious aspect of the story is that we never learn their location or how long they've been wandering like this. I think the apocalypse began shortly before the boy was born, but we're never told his age, nor does his father, because they lost track of time long ago, and that seems very realistic to me. I imagine that when you experience something like this, you lose all sense of space and time; years and seasons pass, but you don't really know how long you've been like this.

Otro punto a destacar es su narración, no hay capítulos que acompañen la historia. Más bien es toda una sucesión de hechos y días con espacios en blanco para dar a entender que se cambió de escenario, esto puede resultar molesto si son de las personas que no les gusta dejar un capítulo por la mitad porque, literal, no hay capítulos. También es curioso cómo suceden los diálogos, como si el que narra la historia nos estuviera contando lo que dijo cada persona involucrada en las conversaciones.

Another point to highlight is its narrative; there are no chapters to accompany the story. Rather, it's a succession of events and days with blank spaces to indicate a change of scene. This might be annoying if you're the type of person who doesn't like leaving a chapter unfinished because, literally, there aren't any chapters. The way the dialogues unfold is also curious, as if the narrator were telling us what each person involved in the conversations said.

En fin, me resultó un libro atrapante y totalmente desesperanzador. No es algo que recomiende a todo el mundo, pero sí es una lectura imprescindible y que vale la pena atravesar, ya que no te deja indiferente y el final se ve venir, pero al mismo tiempo te da un rayo de esperanza de que quizá no esté todo perdido.

In short, I found it a captivating and utterly despairing book. It's not something I'd recommend to everyone, but it's an essential read and well worth experiencing, as it leaves a lasting impression. The ending is somewhat predictable, but at the same time, it offers a glimmer of hope that perhaps all is not lost.
