📚 Book Review: The Housemaid [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles la reseña de un thriller que tenía muy pendiente de leer y la verdad es que me sorprendió muchísimo. Les estoy hablando de La asistenta de Freida McFadden.

Hello, readers! Today I'm here to bring you a review of a thriller that I've been meaning to read for a while, and I have to say, it really surprised me. I'm talking about The Housemaid by Freida McFadden.

Esta historia gira en torno a Millie, una joven que acaba de salir de la prisión luego de 10 años e intenta reorganizar su vida, pero con sus antecedentes penales le resulta difícil encontrar trabajo por lo que está viviendo en su auto hasta que le llega el llamado tan esperado de que quedó contratada como asistente interina de una familia con dinero. Muy pronto descubrirá que Nina Winchester es una mujer extraña que se contradice todo el tiempo y tiene cambios de humor impredecibles, y su hija Cecelia es una niña malcriada y difícil de tratar. El único cuerdo de la familia parece ser Andrew Winchester. Pero nada es como lo pintan y el destino de ambas mujeres se vera entrelazado para siempre.

This story revolves around Millie, a young woman who has just been released from prison after 10 years and is trying to rebuild her life. However, with her criminal record, she finds it difficult to find work, so she is living in her car until she receives the long-awaited call that she has been hired as a temporary assistant for a wealthy family. She soon discovers that Nina Winchester is a strange woman who contradicts herself all the time and has unpredictable mood swings, and her daughter Cecelia is a spoiled and difficult child. The only sane member of the family seems to be Andrew Winchester. But nothing is as it seems, and the fates of both women will be intertwined forever.

Quiero empezar diciendo que había leído muy buenas reseñas acerca del libro, pero leerlo fue muy diferente. La historia es adictiva, logro envolverme y atraparme al instante. Por lo que se lee muy rápido, ya que queres llegar a descubrir qué es lo que está pasando. Nada de lo que leí me preparo para todo lo que encontré entre sus páginas. Fue una grata experiencia.

I want to start by saying that I had read very good reviews about the book, but reading it was very different. The story is addictive; it managed to envelop and captivate me instantly. It's a quick read because you want to find out what's going on. Nothing I read prepared me for what I found within its pages. It was a pleasant experience.

El libro consta de 3 partes que fueron muy necesarias, me encantó cómo estuvo distribuido el asunto. En la primera parte conoceremos la historia desde el punto de vista de Millie, hasta llegar a un suceso clave, y luego pasamos a la segunda parte donde nos narra Nina contando su versión. En la tercera y última parte el punto de vista es compartido entre las dos. Me pareció una buena manera de narrar los hechos, ya que no deja ningún cabo suelto y uno se puede meter mejor en lo qué está viviendo cada protagonista.

The book consists of three parts, which were very necessary. I loved how the story was structured. In the first part, we learn about the story from Millie's point of view, until we reach a key event, and then we move on to the second part, where Nina tells us her version of events. In the third and final part, the point of view is shared between the two. I thought it was a good way to narrate the events, as it leaves no loose ends and allows the reader to better understand what each protagonist is going through.

Lo que más me gustó de la historia es que no es para nada predecible, en un principio creía una cosa, pero resultó ser otra completamente diferente. La verdad que me impactó mucho. También nos encontraremos con unos giros de tramas tremendos, estuvieron muy buenos y no dejo de sorprenderme incluso hasta el final. Aunque debo decir que algo de lo que estaba pasando sí lo intuía y me alegro no haber caído en las garras de cierto personaje que parecía muy amable y sincero, pero resulto todo lo contrario.

What I liked most about the story is that it is not predictable at all. At first, I believed one thing, but it turned out to be something completely different. It really had a big impact on me. There are also some tremendous plot twists, which were very good and kept me surprised right up until the end. Although I must say that I did sense some of what was happening, and I'm glad I didn't fall into the clutches of a certain character who seemed very friendly and sincere, but turned out to be quite the opposite.

Es un thriller muy bueno, con su cuota de suspenso, misterio y drama. Al final desconfías hasta de tu propia mente que está intentando procesar los hechos sin caer en la locura. Todas las veces que pegaba un mini grito cuando sucedía algo que me dejaba impactada y no veía venir es alucinante. Una historia muy cautivadora y atrapante. El final fue perfecto y deja la puerta abierta para el próximo libro, que ya estoy deseando empezar. También les quiero decir, por si esto no fue suficiente, que se va directo a mis lecturas favoritas del año. Así que está más que recomendado por mi parte.

It's a very good thriller, with its share of suspense, mystery, and drama. In the end, you distrust even your own mind as it tries to process the facts without falling into madness. All the times I let out a little scream when something happened that shocked me and I didn't see coming is amazing. A very captivating and gripping story. The ending was perfect and leaves the door open for the next book, which I'm already looking forward to starting. I also want to tell you, in case that wasn't enough, that it's going straight to my favorite reads of the year. So it comes highly recommended from me.
