📚 Book Review: The Call of the Wild [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me paso por acá con mi primera lectura del año, un libro corto pero bastante crudo sobre la vida salvaje y la supervivencia animal. Les estoy hablando de El llamado de la selva del autor Jack London.

Hello, readers! Today I'm here with my first read of the year, a short but quite raw book about wildlife and animal survival. I'm talking about The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

Esta historia gira en torno a Buck, un perro mestizo que tenía una vida tranquila en una finca familiar, pero que un día es vendido por uno de los empleados para pagar una deuda. Así es llevado de la calidez de California al frío de Alaska en plena fiebre del oro. Ahora deberá adaptarse al ambiente hostil y recurrir a sus instintos más ancestrales y primitivos para sobrevivir.

This story revolves around Buck, a mixed-breed dog who had a quiet life on a family farm, but one day is sold by one of the employees to pay off a debt. He is taken from the warmth of California to the cold of Alaska in the midst of the gold rush. Now he must adapt to the hostile environment and resort to his most ancestral and primitive instincts to survive.

Es un libro corto, pero muy sentido. En tan solo 128 páginas pasan muchas cosas, y la mayoría no son lindas. Hay mucho maltrato animal y muertes, así que no lo recomiendo si son sensibles. Igual se entiende el punto de la crítica a lo social y la civilización y lo frágil que es perderla.

It's a short book, but very heartfelt. A lot happens in just 128 pages, and most of it isn't pretty. There's a lot of animal abuse and death, so I don't recommend it if you're sensitive. Still, you get the point of the critique of society and civilization and how fragile it is to lose it.

Buck pasa de mano en mano, aprendiendo diferentes reglas y trabajos como guiar trineos, y siendo castigado cuando hace las cosas mal. En cada oportunidad deberá apoyarse en su instinto más primitivo para lograr sobrevivir. Su ventaja es que es un perro muy listo y aprende rápido cómo funciona la ley del más fuerte, y al final se convierte en una criatura formidable, capaz de valerse por sí solo.

Buck passes from hand to hand, learning different rules and jobs such as guiding sleds, and being punished when he does things wrong. At every turn, he must rely on his most primitive instincts to survive. His advantage is that he is a very smart dog and quickly learns how the law of the strongest works, eventually becoming a formidable creature, capable of fending for himself.

Pero Buck no se entrega de lleno a lo salvaje, sino que todavía guarda rastros de la civilización,, y es allí donde crea un lazo con un humano que le salva la vida en una oportunidad. Y le está muy agradecido, tanto que siente devoción plena por esta persona, como solo los perros son capaces de demostrar. Lo bueno es que es mutuo. Este perro pasó por muchas manos, pero ninguno lo trató tan bien como esta persona y ese vínculo se hace sentir. Es lo más lindo del libro si me lo preguntan. Sin embargo, los instintos primitivos que tuvo que despertar siguen más latentes que nunca, esperando el día en que escuché el llamado de la selva que lo reclama en cuerpo y alma.

But Buck does not give himself over completely to the wild; he still retains traces of civilization, and it is there that he forms a bond with a human who saves his life on one occasion. He is so grateful to this person that he feels complete devotion, as only dogs are capable of showing. The good thing is that it's mutual. This dog passed through many hands, but no one treated him as well as this person, and that bond is palpable. It's the most beautiful thing in the book, if you ask me. However, the primitive instincts he had to awaken remain more latent than ever, waiting for the day when he hears the call of the jungle that claims him body and soul.

Es una lectura interesante donde se hace el camino inverso, de la civilización a lo salvaje, y nos muestra todo el proceso para llegar a ese momento que es bastante significativo y entendible. Me gustó leerlo porque soy fan de los libros con animales como protagonistas, pero sí fue bastante duro y crudo por momentos. Por eso no creo que sea una lectura para todo el mundo, pero si quieren algo que los haga reflexionar acerca de estas dos polaridades y los instintos de supervivencia, este es el libro ideal para eso.

It is an interesting read that takes us on the opposite journey, from civilization to the wild, and shows us the entire process leading up to that moment, which is quite meaningful and understandable. I enjoyed reading it because I am a fan of books with animals as protagonists, but it was quite harsh and raw at times. That is why I do not think it is a book for everyone, but if you want something that makes you reflect on these two polarities and survival instincts, this is the ideal book for that.
