📚 Book Review: People We Meet on Vacation [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hace unos días subí reseña de la adaptación y ahora le toca al libro que leí antes de verla. Así que hoy les traigo la reseña de Gente que conocemos en vacaciones de la autora Emily Henry.

Hello, readers! A few days ago, I posted a review of the adaptation, and now it's time for the book I read before watching it. So today, I bring you a review of People We Meet on Vacation by author Emily Henry.

La historia gira entorno a dos mejores amigos, Poppy y Alex, que son muy diferentes entre sí, pero que encontraron la manera de mantener a flote su amistad. Durante cada verano, se toman una semana de vacaciones para verse y conocer otros lugares. Llevan más de 10 años con ese acuerdo, primero haciendo viajes de bajo presupuesto y ahora con todo mayormente financiado por el trabajo de Poppy como periodista de viajes. Pero algo ocurrió hace 2 veranos y ahora no se hablan, pero Poppy va a aprovechar la última oportunidad para recomponer la amistad antes de que sea demasiado tarde y pierda algo más que un amigo.

The story revolves around two best friends, Poppy and Alex, who are very different from each other but have found a way to keep their friendship alive. Every summer, they take a week's vacation to see each other and visit new places. They have had this arrangement for over 10 years, first taking low-budget trips and now with most of it financed by Poppy's job as a travel journalist. But something happened two summers ago and now they are not on speaking terms, but Poppy is going to take advantage of one last chance to repair their friendship before it's too late and she loses more than just a friend.

Para los que no saben de que va, es una historia friends to lovers y aunque no sea mi trope favorito, estas historias siempre me dejan varios días reflexionando. En esta ocasión me hizo pensar en qué pesa más en una relacion romántica, si alguien que es similar a vos en gustos y pueden compartir pasiones o si alguien que no tiene nada que ver con tus gustos, e incluso tengan personalidades diferentes, pero de alguna manera se complementan. La verdad es que mi duda no viene a cuento de nada (o sí), pero es en lo que me dejo pensando el libro.

For those who don't know what it's about, it's a friends-to-lovers story, and although it's not my favorite trope, these stories always leave me thinking for several days. This time, it made me wonder what matters more in a romantic relationship: someone who is similar to you in tastes and can share your passions, or someone who has nothing to do with your tastes and even has a different personality, but somehow complements you. The truth is that my question is irrelevant (or maybe not), but it's what the book left me thinking about.

También me hizo dar cuenta de que lo que es para uno, lo será aunque intentes quitarte mil veces, y lo que no es para uno, ni aunque te pongas a rogar lo será. Es algo que tuve que aprender hace poco y todavía estoy tratando de asimilar, así que puede ser por eso que el libro me dejo muy pensativa.

It also made me realize that what is meant for you will be yours even if you try to take it away a thousand times, and what is not meant for you will never be yours, even if you beg for it. It's something I had to learn recently and I'm still trying to come to terms with, so maybe that's why the book left me feeling very thoughtful.

Es el segundo libro que leo de la autora y, sin duda, es mi favorito hasta ahora. Me gusta que no se quede solo en una comedia romántica, sino que va más allá y explora los traumas de los protagonistas. Es bastante profundo si se lo ponen a analizar. Además, es una bonita historia, me hizo reír y suspirar. Aunque también me frustre y enloquecí con los personajes por tardar tanto en estar juntos. Eso es lo que no me gusta de estas historias, el tiempo que pasan sin estar juntos a pesar de amarse, todo por el miedo a perder la amistad. El libro también tiene cierto aire de intriga porque queres saber qué es lo que paso hace 2 veranos atrás con estos dos, igual es fácil intuirlo.

This is the second book I've read by this author, and it's definitely my favorite so far. I like that it's not just a romantic comedy, but goes further and explores the protagonists' traumas. It's quite profound if you analyze it. It's also a beautiful story; it made me laugh and sigh. Although I also got frustrated and mad at the characters for taking so long to get together. That's what I don't like about these stories, the time they spend apart despite loving each other, all because of the fear of losing their friendship. The book also has a certain air of intrigue because you want to know what happened to these two two summers ago, although it's easy to guess.

Ese es otro punto a favor, me gusto la manera de estar narrado en dos tiempos, el presente y lo que fue pasando en los veranos desde que se conocieron hasta llegar a lo que sucedio cuando dejaron de hablarse e hicieron ese parate en su amistad. Esa parte me mantuvo super enganchada, esperaba llegar a la revelación, aunque no fue para tanto teniendo en cuenta todo lo que fue pasando. Se veía venir, pero igual uno quiere llegar a esa parte.

That's another plus point. I liked the way it was narrated in two time frames: the present and what happened during the summers from when they met until what happened when they stopped talking to each other and took a break from their friendship. That part kept me hooked. I was waiting for the revelation, although it wasn't that big a deal considering everything that had happened. It was predictable, but you still want to get to that part.

No quiero indagar mucho en los traumas de cada protagonistas porque eso lo pasaron un poco por arriba en la película, no le dieron la profundidad que tuvo en el libro. Realmente acá ves muchos de los miedos que tiene cada uno y porque hacen lo que hacen. El motivo por el que Poppy teme volver a su pueblo, y se la pasa viajando de un lado a otro, sin estar mucho tiempo quieta en un solo lugar. También la razón de Alex de hacer lo opuesto, es un hombre que le gusta hechar raíces y establecerse en un sitio. Cada uno tiene sus propios fantasmas con los que lidiar. En ese sentido, el libro aborda la importancia de cuidar la salud mental, así que es bastante completo.

I don't want to delve too deeply into each character's traumas because the film glossed over them a bit and didn't give them the depth they had in the book. Here, you really see many of the fears that each character has and why they do what they do. The reason Poppy is afraid to return to her hometown, and spends her time traveling from place to place, without staying in one place for very long. Also, Alex's reason for doing the opposite; he is a man who likes to put down roots and settle in one place. Each has their own ghosts to deal with. In that sense, the book addresses the importance of taking care of mental health, so it's quite comprehensive.

También me gustó mucho la parte en la que el título del libro cobra sentido porque fue lo primero que me llamó la atención, si leo el título sin saber de qué va la historia no me dice nada. Pienso que se trata de una historia de alguien que conoce a otro en vacaciones y de ahí nacen los sentimientos, pero lejos está de eso. Así que se lo dejo para que lo descubran ustedes y sin nada más que decir les recomiendo que se lean el libro que es una joyita.

I also really liked the part where the title of the book makes sense because it was the first thing that caught my attention. If I read the title without knowing what the story is about, it doesn't mean anything to me. I thought it was a story about someone who meets someone else on vacation and feelings develop from there, but it's far from that. So, I'll leave it for you to discover for yourselves, and with nothing more to say, I recommend that you read the book, which is a little gem.
