📚 Book Review: Love on The Brain [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Espero que estén todos muy bien. Hoy me paso por acá para traerles la reseña del libro La química del amor de la autora Ali Hazelwood.

Hello, readers! I hope you are all doing well. Today I'm here to bring you a review of the book Love on The Brain by author Ali Hazelwood.

En esta historia conoceremos a Bee, una neurocientífica que está por recibir la oferta de trabajo de su vida, diseñar unos cascos inteligentes para los astronautas de la NASA. Esto le va a abrir muchas puertas y quizá tenga la suerte de poder tener su propio laboratorio y dejar de depender de su detestable jefe. Pero su entusiasmo se ve disminuido cuando se da cuenta que va a codirigir el proyecto con Levi Ward, su archienemigo de la escuela de posgrado. Aunque hace 6 años que no se ven y, de todos modos, no va a permitir que nada ni nadie se interponga en su camino.

In this story, we meet Bee, a neuroscientist who is about to receive the job offer of a lifetime: designing smart helmets for NASA astronauts. This will open many doors for her, and she may even be lucky enough to have her own laboratory and stop depending on her detestable boss. But her enthusiasm wanes when she realizes she will be co-directing the project with Levi Ward, her arch-enemy from graduate school. Although they haven't seen each other in six years, she won't let anything or anyone stand in her way.

Este es el tercer libro que leí de la autora y debo decir que está peleando cabeza a cabeza por ser mi favorito junto con el de La hipótesis del amor. Es un libro que sabía que me iba a gustar, pero no pensé que me iba a atrapar tanto. Fue un viaje lleno de emociones, me enganchó de principio a fin y en ningún momento disminuyó mi ritmo de lectura, quería leer el libro en cada momento libre que encontraba e incluso me dormía pensando en él. Sí, así como lo escuchan.

This is the third book I've read by this author, and I must say that it's neck and neck with The Love Hypothesis for my favorite. I knew I was going to like this book, but I didn't think it would draw me in so much. It was an emotional journey that hooked me from beginning to end. I never slowed down my reading pace; I wanted to read the book every free moment I had and even fell asleep thinking about it. Yes, you heard me right.

La historia me resultó bastante atrapante, ya sabía más o menos que esperar por los anteriores que leí donde tienen protagonistas femeninas que estudiaron alguna ciencia y tienen que lidiar con el machismo institucional de sus respectivas carreras y profesiones. Eso es lo que más me gusta de los libros de Ali acerca de estos temas, que no se queda solo en la comedia o el romance, sino que intenta usar sus conocimientos para denunciar y hablar sobre las injusticias que atraviesan las mujeres incluso hoy en día en aquellos ámbitos. La crítica social siempre viene bien y le da un plus a cualquier historia.

I found the story quite captivating. I already knew more or less what to expect from the previous books I had read, which feature female protagonists who studied science and have to deal with institutional sexism in their respective careers and professions. That's what I like most about Ali's books on these topics: they don't just stick to comedy or romance, but try to use their knowledge to denounce and talk about the injustices that women still face today in those fields. Social criticism is always welcome and adds something extra to any story.

En ese sentido, y en otros, el libro me dio todo, un romance espectacular, risas, momentos dramáticos y emocionales, gatos heroicos y un final digno de película de acción. Además de unos personajes secundarios bastantes geniales que hicieron su parte en la historia. Y la montaña rusa que me hizo vivir, al principio odie a Levi, después me arrepentí de haberlo prejuzgado, luego me desquicié con Bee por cosas que iban pasando. Me reí a carcajadas, hace mucho que un libro no me hacía reír tanto, suspiré, me enamoré de Levi hasta los huesos, es el tipo de hombre ficticio de mis sueños jajaja. Voy a extrañar mucho esta lectura.

In that sense, and in others, the book gave me everything: a spectacular romance, laughter, dramatic and emotional moments, heroic cats, and an ending worthy of an action movie. Plus some pretty cool supporting characters who played their part in the story. And the roller coaster ride it took me on: at first I hated Levi, then I regretted prejudging him, then I got mad at Bee for things that were happening. I laughed out loud—it had been a long time since a book had made me laugh so much—I sighed, I fell head over heels in love with Levi, he's the kind of fictional man of my dreams, ha ha ha. I'm going to miss this book a lot.

A pesar de todo también amé a Bee, es un personaje muy divertido e ingenioso, creo que pude conectar bastante con ella y me encanto su química con Levi, hacía mucho que no veía cómo dos personajes eran tan iguales en muchos aspectos, es como si fueran hechos el uno para el otro (sí lo fueron jaja), pero bueno, ustedes me entienden. Amé a los personajes secundarios, como la asistenta de Bee y la compañera de Levi, a la pequeña Penny y a su madre. A la hermana gemela de Bee y, por supuesto, a los gatos que aparecen en la historia. También me encantó la obsesión que tiene Bee por Marie Curie y me gustó aprender un montón de datos sobre ella, ahora creo que yo también soy su fan.

Despite everything, I also loved Bee. She's a very funny and witty character. I think I was able to connect with her quite a bit, and I loved her chemistry with Levi. It had been a long time since I had seen two characters who were so alike in so many ways. It's as if they were made for each other (yes, they were, haha), but anyway, you know what I mean. I loved the secondary characters, like Bee's maid and Levi's partner, little Penny and her mother. Bee's twin sister and, of course, the cats that appear in the story. I also loved Bee's obsession with Marie Curie and enjoyed learning a lot of facts about her. Now I think I'm a fan too.

En fin, es de esas historias que se quedan con uno incluso luego de terminarla y fue tan increíble leerlo. Una de mis mejores lecturas de romance del año, estoy muy contenta de haber hecho esta elección, me dio todo lo que esperaba e incluso más. Así que lo super recomiendo.

In short, it's one of those stories that stays with you even after you finish it, and it was so incredible to read. One of my favorite romance reads of the year, I'm so glad I chose it. It gave me everything I hoped for and more. So I highly recommend it.
