📚 Book Review: Fear & Hunger [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Como es Halloween les tengo preparada una reseña de un libro de terror que termine hace poco y me pareció ideal para esta época. El libro se llama Miedo & Hambre de la escritora Rocío Magalí Olgiati.

Hello, readers! Since it's Halloween, I've prepared a review of a horror book that I recently finished and thought would be perfect for this time of year. The book is called Miedo & Hambre (Fear & Hunger) by Rocío Magalí Olgiati.

La historia gira en torno a 2 hermanos, Owen y Jemina, que están atrapados en la habitación de un hotel porque se produce una pandemia y tienen que quedarse aislados. Lejos de sus padres y encerrados, no tienen dinero ni nada para comer, deciden recurrir a los métodos más bajos y oscuros con tal de conseguir comida y escapar de ese lugar antes de que el hambre y el miedo acaben con ellos.

The story revolves around two siblings, Owen and Jemina, who are trapped in a hotel room because of a pandemic and have to remain isolated. Far from their parents and locked up, with no money and nothing to eat, they decide to resort to the lowest and darkest methods in order to get food and escape from that place before hunger and fear consume them.

Es un libro corto, pero bastante impactante de leer. No es que de miedo, pero hay escenas muy gore como para impresionarte. Además de otras cuestiones que pueden resultar repulsivas. Es una historia que resalta lo que es capaz de hacer el ser humano en situaciones críticas para intentar sobrevivir. Pero también nos habla de la fragilidad de la salud mental.

It's a short book, but quite shocking to read. It's not scary, but there are some very gory scenes that will shock you. In addition to other issues that may be repulsive. It's a story that highlights what humans are capable of doing in critical situations in order to survive. But it also tells us about the fragility of mental health.

La trama me resultó atrapante y envolvente, quería continuar leyendo para ver hacia donde iba a desembocar el final y lo mejor es que no te lo ves venir. Hay unos giros en la trama muy interesantes que hacen que no sea una lectura predecible. Me encanta cuando un libro te cambia los planes y no sabes hacía dónde va hasta el final. La atmósfera que se percibe en toda la lectura es la de la locura y el miedo, es todo muy inquietante. Hay escenas bastantes fuertes de digerir, pero esto no lo hace menos interesante.

I found the plot captivating and immersive; I wanted to keep reading to see where the ending would lead, and the best part is that you don't see it coming. There are some very interesting twists in the plot that make it unpredictable. I love it when a book changes your plans and you don't know where it's going until the end. The atmosphere throughout the book is one of madness and fear; it's all very disturbing. There are some scenes that are quite difficult to digest, but this doesn't make it any less interesting.

Los personajes de los hermanos están muy bien pensados, tanto que de verdad me sorprendió lo que pasó. Me estoy conteniendo para no hacerles ningún spoilers, pero créanme cuando les digo que nada es lo que parece. El final fue el acertado para una historia de estas características. Lo que me gusta es que la escritora creó su propio multiverso de personajes, ya que al final tenemos mención de las protagonistas de su libro anterior y sus libros logran romper la cuarta pared y tener un diálogo con sus lectores. Esto es muy genial.

The characters created by the brothers are very well thought out, so much so that I was truly surprised by what happened. I'm trying hard not to give away any spoilers, but believe me when I say that nothing is what it seems. The ending was the right one for a story like this. What I like is that the writer created her own multiverse of characters, since at the end we have references to the protagonists of her previous book, and her books manage to break the fourth wall and have a dialogue with her readers. This is really cool.

No es un libro que recomiendo a todo el mundo, si son impresionables no lo lean. Tiene escenas fuertes de verdad, mucha sangre, asesinatos, canibalismo, abusos y violencia. Pero si no es el caso y les llama la atención está más que recomendado por mí parte.

This is not a book I would recommend to everyone. If you are easily shocked, don't read it. It contains some truly graphic scenes, with lots of blood, murder, cannibalism, abuse, and violence. But if that's not the case and it catches your attention, I highly recommend it.
