📚 Book Review: El lugar [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles mi reseña acerca de un libro bastante peculiar como lo es El lugar. Entre lo negro y lo gris del autor Federico J. Serventi.

Hello, readers! Today I'm here to bring you my review of a rather peculiar book called El lugar. Entre lo negro y lo gris (The Place: Between Black and Gray) by Federico J. Serventi.

En esta historia conoceremos a Íthad, un chico que es maltratado por su padre y por sus compañeros de colegio. Su vida se debate entre sus momentos de alivio acostado en el patio mirando las estrellas y el dolor del día. Hasta que un hecho lo sacude y es obsequiado con la reliquia del caos que le otorga un poder que será puesto a prueba por otros y es así como pasa de víctima a victimario. En su viaje a conocer los confines del mundo, se encontrará con otros personajes singulares como él que lo desafiaran o serán sus maestros y guías en esta aventura.

In this story, we meet Íthad, a boy who is abused by his father and his schoolmates. His life is torn between moments of relief lying in the courtyard looking at the stars and the pain of the day. Until an event shakes him up and he is gifted with the relic of chaos, which gives him a power that will be tested by others, and that is how he goes from victim to perpetrator. On his journey to discover the ends of the world, he will meet other unique characters like himself who will challenge him or be his teachers and guides in this adventure.

Es una lectura bastante interesante, pero que puede resultar confusa en cierto punto por la cantidad de metáforas y los diálogos existencialistas con los que nos encontraremos a lo largo de sus páginas. Es de esas lecturas que hay que leerlas despacio porque sino podes llegar a perderte, requiere bastante concentración para no perderse dentro de tanto cambio de perspectiva y escenarios. Fue desafiante, pero me encantó leerlo.

It's a pretty interesting read, but it can be confusing at times because of the number of metaphors and existentialist dialogues we encounter throughout its pages. It's one of those books that you have to read slowly, otherwise you can get lost. It requires a lot of concentration to keep track of all the changes in perspective and settings. It was challenging, but I loved reading it.

Otra particularidad que tiene es que no hay mucha ambientación, ni descripción en base a los personajes, no tenemos idea de cómo lucen o cómo es el lugar en el que habitan, pero si tienen imaginación esta los va a ayudar a completar los rasgos faltantes. No es algo que limite, de hecho, yo no me percate de esto hasta bastante avanzada la lectura, pero en mi mente creaba escenarios igual donde estos personajes se desenvolvían.

Another peculiarity is that there is not much setting or character description. We have no idea what they look like or what the place they live in is like, but if you have imagination, it will help you fill in the missing details. It's not something that limits the story. In fact, I didn't notice this until quite late in the book, but in my mind I created scenarios where these characters could develop.

Me parece que cada personaje juega un papel importante dentro de la trama, aunque algunos aparecen y se van así como llegaron. Eso también puede ser confuso. Siento como si le hubieran dado un papel a algunos para que al final acabará en nada. El sentido de la obra puede ser bastante amplio, ya que no hay una meta por ahora. Son personajes algo rotos que están tratando de reconstruirse o descubrir algo nuevo, lo que hay detrás de la neblina que puede ser tanto bueno, como malo. Ese es el eje principal de la historia.

I think each character plays an important role in the plot, although some appear and disappear just as quickly as they arrived. That can also be confusing. I feel as if some characters were given a role that ultimately amounts to nothing. The meaning of the work can be quite broad, as there is no goal for now. They are somewhat broken characters who are trying to rebuild themselves or discover something new, what lies behind the fog that can be either good or bad. That is the main focus of the story.

Es una lectura bastante reflexiva que plantea dilemas existenciales, y aunque puede tener tintes de fantasía por momentos, no deja de intentar parecerse a la vida misma con todas sus complejidades. La verdad que, como dije al principio, es una lectura desafiante, pero que me encantó leer. Eso sí, es un libro que los va a hacer pensar bastante, ya están avisados. Por mí parte está más que recomendado.

It is a rather thoughtful read that raises existential dilemmas, and although it may have hints of fantasy at times, it never ceases to try to resemble life itself with all its complexities. The truth is, as I said at the beginning, it is a challenging read, but I loved reading it. Of course, it is a book that will make you think a lot, so be warned. For my part, I highly recommend it.
